This French Eclectic home is regal in its symmetry and street presence and with its formidable position on the top of a hill, it commands attention. The views are spectacular and the open plan allows for multiple distant vistas from most rooms in the house. The natural slate roof and smooth stucco finish add to its allure and appeal. At 5,600 sf, it is large enough to provide for expansive public spaces, yet also graciously sized and appointed bedroom suites. All bedrooms are en suite. The master bathroom is almost entirely lined in Carrara marble in slab and tile form and the custom arched mahogany front door with a unique wrought iron grill work design towers at the entry. The stucco on the house is complemented by the extensive use of travertine on the hardscape areas of the site.

The owners of this 1950s Ranch Style home wanted a modern home without the added expense of new, ground up construction. The house was well and appropriately positioned on the sloping property, so it was just a matter of improving the plan above using most of the footings that existed. The house was transformed into a contemporary home by employing a butterfly roof form, clean lines, and cedar boards combined with the existing, refurbished stucco siding. The ‘clean’ look on the exterior is also achieved by stratifying the building materials vertically. At the original eave level was established a horizontal ‘band’ that delineated the change from stucco to siding and lower windows from upper glazing. The 54” pivoting front door cleanly blends in with the siding and provides for a 42” clear opening and majestic entryway.

A tranquil soak in a peaceful environment. Warm gray tones and light marble colors go a long way to promoting the feeling of serenity and allow for a pop of color at the owner’s discretion.

This earth-toned example of the Modern Farmhouse aesthetic comes complete with a 24-foot high Great Room ceiling, interior catwalk between bedroom wings, and a glass bridge at the rear courtyard that provides exceptional light in the Basement. There is also a second floor Study that overlooks the Great Room below and the spacious exterior entertaining area is accessed through 20 foot pocketing doors which expands the living area to the outdoors.

Nothing like a dramatic butterfly roof to make a statement. Large glass exposure to the northeast and massive Tesla roof surface facing southwest, allows this house to stay cool, enjoy spectacular views without glare, and produce enough electricity to not depend on the local utility at all. The roof also creates the same drama on the interior.
