Old Bumble’s Farm returns to the market this week to celebrate the 250th year of our nation with a selection of native perennial plants dating back 250 years (and more!) to the birth of the United States. Native plants were important culinary and medicinal resources Colonial Americans received from Native American communities, and were also part of the natural and cultural landscapes of our Founding Fathers and the general population of our newly-born nation. Thomas Jefferson’s horticultural advisor nurseryman Bernard McMahon published his famous 1806 American Gardener’s Calendar, urging readers to “comb the local woodlands and fields for the various beautiful ornaments with which nature has so profusely decorated them”; that is to say, go find native plants!
Well, you’ll find those native plants of colonial New Jersey for your modern Burlington County garden at this week’s market. Special logo graphics by , historic milkweed image from the New York Public Library Digital Collections , plant list from McMahon’s 1806 American Gardeners Calendar .
July 13, 8:30am-1pm, come early for best selection.
