Paddock Shift: I shot the attached video last Monday. I think it was a day or two later before I posted it. It's time again, I was hoping to make it to Monday but they need more grass. It will be the last move on this paddock for awhile. We'll go up north until winter hits and then come back to this paddock and graze the slope:

I wrote this as a comment on the Father's Rights group. I shared the post to my page but my comment isn't readily visible so here it is:

It can be tough to join the company of successful people when life has beat you up, chewed you up and spit you out. Been there, done that got the t-shirt. Brothers, you have to hold your head high, ain't nobody else "gonna" do it for you. CHOOSE to be happy in life, despite your circumstances... Fake it if you have to. Be happy and delighted to see everyone you encounter throughout your day. Love the job you hate, do a good job, pay your bills. People will notice, people will look to you for support and guidance and want you around. Most importantly, at the end of the day you will be there for your children. Hopefully now but later if that is what it takes. Peace, -Chris.

Eminent Domain, Farms/Ranches & Compensation: I've seen a lot of news coverage on the use of eminent domain to take land, or parts of land, or at least the use of it. With that the question of: "What is just compensation to the farmer?" If a working operation has to be relocated, that is a multi year event. It takes years to build out infrastructure and implement operations.

I have been on this farm for 21 years. I have been renovating and building the whole time and I'm far from having it all done...

Custom Millwork:

Taking orders for custom millwork this fall. We have all the standard profile cutter heads: Ranch casing, baseboard, crown molding, quarter round, chair rail, and more...

Slabs too. Finished or unfinished. Will dig out photos later...

Pork: We'll have naturally raised pork available again towards the end of the year as well. Working with some new genetics, don't know how long these hogs will take to grow out. They are dense, I can say that for now!

500 Trees, m/l. We hand planted and mulched around 500 trees this spring. We mulched with fresh cut hay. It took forever, it was too wet, then it was too dry and of course it took time to cut the hay, rake it, collect it and then spread it... As much as possible we cut the hay from the very spots where the trees were getting planted. Some spots the grass was too thin though and hay had to be cut elsewhere and hauled in.

We're behind on everything else because of it. We watered all the trees once, then after a week it started raining again and hasn't stopped. Hopefully the rains keep the trees watered the rest of the season and do so without doing more damage to other things.

The trees should provide many benefits in the future. Wind protection for starters, shelter and food for wildlife ( and food for people ). There are native plums and Gold Currants in the planning and several other fruits that wildlife will like. Of course the trees should help catch rain and blowing silt and someday some of them will provide lumber and fuel.

Side note: Natural Disasters: We lost a building in 2003 right before we moved in. I salvaged most of it out for other building projects but embarrassingly part of it is still laying there waiting on me... We lost portable shelters left and right over the years but no more permanent buildings until 2017. That year, we lost 2 in one storm, a bin and a corn crib. It's been one blow after another from natural disasters since. The one culvert has needed frequent attention since. We lose more and more of our lane in each flood. 2019 we lost the dam, rebuilt that. Also a hail storm in 19' took out the windshield on a pickup and every window on the north side of the house. In 21' we got the greenhouse up, the December Derecho promptly smashed it up! The electrical service in the shop has been coming and going since the spring of 22'...

After the flooding in 19' there was supposed to be all sorts of funding landowners and business owners could tap into to rebuild. most of it didn't materialize and much of it got cut short as we moved into the covid disaster in 20'. So, tighten the old belt, don't go anywhere, don't buy anything if it isn't 110% essential... Most of you know the routine!

The funny part, every now and then someone will wander out to the farm and act like we haven't been doing anything!

It's a small thing compared to what's happened east and north of here but for the next few weeks we can't use our main entry to the yard:

LANE CLOSED: The culvert before the yard is partially washed out. It will not hold if a vehicle tries to cross it. Do not attempt to cross it. As always, call first before coming out to the farm. The rest of the lane is in poor shape from repeated flooding since 18'. The township road is also in poor shape with deep ruts. Anyway, for anyone who ventures out, they've been warned!
