Spring is in full swing here at Bloomfields. Seed starting, planting, and taking dahlia cuttings to build up inventory has kept me completely busy lately.

I tend to handle most of the plant related work myself, but I’ve learned that planting goes so much faster with an extra set of hands. Enter my side kick. Pr***en energy, the occasional eye roll, and all. She has been such a huge help this season. Yes, she may end up laying down on the job at times (quite literally), or elbow deep in mud for reasons unrelated to productivity, but when crunch time hits, she shows up. I am so grateful for this family of mine.

Here’s to the helpers who make the hard seasons a little more manageable.

Last year was our first growing season at our place, and we got a late start. Moving from a city lot to a few acres means everything is bigger, grander, and more expensive. That’s just the reality of it.

So Rob and I took full advantage of the amazing weather last weekend, away from our day jobs and with work to do. By Sunday evening, the drip lines were in and on.

Generational living is one of my greatest blessings. The rewards far outweigh any challenge.

I looked up from my work in the field to find that my mom had come out to talk to my daughter, who was weeding the daffodils. In that moment, that exact moment, everything was right in the world. You cannot keep these two apart. Thick as thieves, those two.

🌱 First Day of Spring!

This means we made it through Winter, although SW Idaho didn’t have much of one. I am not sure the ground even froze?

We’ve made our beds in the field. I’m planting astilbe today and I continue to wake up dahlia tubers and take cuttings to increase my inventory.

If you haven’t grown dahlias before you are missing out! And friends do not let friends buy dahlias from Costco, Home Depot, and Lowe’s. And I am your friend. 😳

Now get out there and take in this glorious weather!

Lesson learned: Gophers don’t take winter breaks! 🐹🚫

While I was planning my spring beds, the gophers were busy excavating them. I didn't realize they stay active year round.

It’s one thing when they were far away from my beds but they’ve moved into them. Gophers and voles love tubers so dahlias and gophers is no bueno!

We hired an expert to help us clear the field before planting begins. He suspected five gophers were calling our field home, he caught three.

It was a tad bit windy this weekend. The flags held their ground, but the farm stand? Not so much. 🙃 Round two of "Stand vs. Wind" goes to the Treasure Valley gusts!

I really do love Idaho. The people, the pace, the culture and especially having four true seasons.

By the time you’re ready for a season to end, the next one is right around the corner.

This time of year is quiet. The days are dreary, the nights are long and dark, and January and February can feel like they stretch on forever.

But there’s a small comfort I keep coming back to, winter solstice was December 21 which means the days are already getting longer. ☀️

More light is on the way. Longer days are ahead. And before we know it, the field will wake up again.

Holding onto that hope as we move through winter.
