Really missing the flowers and picking till it’s dark out…feeling that hot summer sun on my skin. Winter is soooo long! These flowers were cut and arranged for a bouquet bar during a baby shower last August. I’m kind of amazed because I always think that dahlias are the choice crop of the garden because I’m more obsessed with them than all the others, but May, June, July, and the beginning of August have plenty of beauty without them too. I’ve been a gardener for all of my adult years, planning the timing of flowers planted has paid off. There is not a season that isn’t giving in my yard, and it only took 43 years to get here. ❤️

That took a lot of FB scrolling, but this one picture sticks in my mind on every MLK day. My sweet Ava, the first of the homeschoolers, back when I would stay up all night to prepare activities that she would finish in 10 minutes.🤣 How far she has come- this year a senior, this year we’ll be tying a ribbon on this chapter. Graduation is right around the corner, if I had to sum up her achievements, this picture would say it all. She is a light and joy, a forever friend. She embodies this verse and I couldn’t be more proud. ❤️

Baron Katie. A mislabeled surprise I spent half the summer trying to ID. But when I posted a photo in my dahlia club, her name was instantly known and the accolades came rolling in. “I love Baron Katie!” “I will always grow this one!” “Oh, that’s Baron Katie, no doubt!” “Such a beautiful dahlia!”
Baron Katie Confirmed! ✅ This is why I don’t get mad about mislabeled tubers. Keeps me on the hunt for the one I thought it was going to be, and I’m usually pleasantly surprised by the bloom anyway. I wouldn’t have picked this dahlia, but I’m so glad she picked me!
Prolific bloomer, beautiful ombré that fades from a red coral in the center to yellow underneath with twisty petals that add to her fullness. Then as summer continued, that coral turned to a fiery red. They were the focal for arrangements I made for my great nephew’s medical fundraising event. He loves cars, and these blooms were giving Lightning McQueen. By fall, they were blooming their hearts out and provided lots of seed heads for our first year breeding program. I can’t wait to see what her seedlings bring. This one is a winner!

Polka. I love a dahlia with a picotee edge. She is a late bloomer, but always finds her way back to my garden. This year it was a mislabeled surprise, the best kind. Polka reminds me of my Grandma and my Czechoslovakian roots. The OG Bohemians. Bohunk was a term of affection in her home along with a few other inappropriate words in a language I didn’t understand, but their delivery told you so. Thanks for the love of music and gnarly chin hairs, grandma. Those bohemians know how to grow ‘em, lol.

Dreaming of summertime, sunshine, and event work! This was a dreamy flowerscape for a citrus themed bridal shower I put together in August. While dahlias are my fave, the Lemony Peach zinnias stole the show with their button centers and ombré that didn’t quit! Layers of petals with a pop! I loaded the arrangements with Mrs. Burns Lemon Basil- I swear it smells just like Fruit Loops. This was one of my favorite floral moments from last summer, still thinking about it. It was that perfect time of year when my roses were on their second flush and the dahlias had begun to do their thing.

KA’s Cinder Rose. First year in my garden, she bloomed in the late part of dahlia season and was worth the wait! I took a few cuttings from the tuber I received in early spring, this next year I’m hoping for better production because isn’t she gorgeous?! I love the creamy color with that soft lavender pink reverse and the way the edges of the petals light up. It’s a must-grow! My top ten list is probably a top thirty now, but this dahlia is on it! The cutest little Pom, Betty Anne, bloomed right along side her and was a perfect compliment to that center of pink. The bouquets just make themselves sometimes!

Alloway Candy. A stellar form pink dahlia. In the dahlia showing world, a blown center is a no-no, but in my garden, it’s a YES-YES! I love the cheery yellow center and especially when the inner petals get those layers of curls. Blooms shift with the season, they go from open to closed depending on temperature flux. I’m here for it all! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
