—— 🚨Pro Tip Tuesday: Picture Hanging 🚨 ——
Picture hanging is one of those jobs that looks simple until you’re staring at 12 holes and a crooked frame.
Here are some solid pro-level tips that make a big difference:
🔨 Start with layout before you touch a hammer.
🔨 Hang at the right height (not where most people instinctively put it). Center of the artwork should generally land around 57–60 inches from the floor. That’s eye level for most people and what galleries use.
🔨 Use a level—but don’t trust just the bubble. Walls, floors, and ceilings are often not perfectly straight. Always measure from a fixed reference point (like trim or ceiling) so your whole set doesn’t slowly drift off.
🔨 Find studs when weight matters. Anything heavy gets a stud or proper anchor. Drywall anchors are fine for lighter pieces, but mirrors and larger frames should have real support behind them.
🔨Use two hooks instead of one when possible. This keeps the frame from shifting over time and makes it much easier to keep things level long-term.
🔨 Mark the hook position, not just the top of the frame. A common mistake is marking where the frame sits instead of where the hanging hardware actually lands.
🔨 Run tape across the wall, mark your nail points on the tape, then transfer it to the wall. Keeps your spacing clean without a bunch of pencil marks everywhere.
🔨 Step back often. What looks “perfect” up close can look off from across the room. Check alignment from a distance every few pieces.
And remember, there is no job too small for our Handyman PLUS. If you don’t have the time or capacity to fool with measuring, remeasuring, planning and hanging, we know a guy 😉
