Through their involvement with the Green Roof & Infrastructure Team (GRIT) knowledge community, a group of HMFHers played a key role in developing the to promote the widespread incorporation of green roofs and infrastructure into the built environment and advocate for policies that support this integration.
Comprised of participants from a range of disciplines including designers, engineers, manufacturers, academics, and policy makers, the GRIT knowledge community draws on the deep and varied expertise of its members as well as research on how others practicing across the U.S. and Europe are optimizing green infrastructure to create more resilient buildings and cities. The team’s mission is to broaden the design community’s understanding of green roofs beyond their role as amenities, and to champion their integration as essential strategies for resilience, performance, and sustainability.
Now available on the Boston Society for Architecture (BSA) website, the Green Roof & Infrastructure Resource Manual provides accessible information on the design, installation, maintenance, and policies related to green roofs, specifically for projects in the Atlantic Northeast within the IECC Climate-Specific Building Codes and climate zones 5A and 6A.
The manual is organized into three categories:
🌿Green roof and infrastructure case studies
🌿Policy and regulation
🌿Technical resources on green roof and infrastructure design, installation, and maintenance
In its first iteration, the Green Roof & Infrastructure Resource Manual features nine case studies with contributions from architects, landscape architects, civil engineers, and design/build green roof companies, including HMFH public schools , , and . Each case study includes project information such as the green roof’s type, size, application, climate zone, and unique benefits, as well as lessons learned regarding system integration and maintenance.
Future iterations will include information on green roof and infrastructure policies at the national and local level, as well as the latest green roof research and technologies. Intended as a living document for planners, designers, and policy makers, the manual will be continuously updated to include new projects and technologies as they emerge.
