As I was saying yesterday, I built 3 sets of stairs last February. These two were built for my mother-in-law so she would have easier access to the garden on the hill. The first stairway was built using 4 inch retaining wall blocks I salvaged from another project. Slate chips were used for the landings. The second stairway was built using 6x6 inch timbers staked to the ground with 1/2 inch rebar. Previously a long semi-steep hill, it has been transformed into a easy climb up the hill.

I was reviewing some photos I took last February and I ran across 3 sets of stairs I built. This one is in Harmony on the Lakes. We use 36 inch x 18 inch Crab Orchard steppers and added some garden boulders for interest. January through March is a excellent time for me to be creative and build something unique for you!

In the first photo the previous contractor laid these 400 lb stone steppers on fresh uncompacted topsoil. Over time the topsoil washed out and the stone steppers settled into the hill, making the steps virtually unwalkable.

The second photo shows the improvements after completely disassembling the stairs, moving them to hard dirt and reassembling with concrete support and river rock to manage stormwater runoff. The handrail was also rebuilt to match the new curvature and slope of the stairs.

Needless to say, the homeowner is very happy with the results!

This water feature was specifically built for bird watching! The trickling sound of the water attracts birds. The rocks are very shallow and allow the birds to jump from rock to rock or take a bird bath. This water feature was placed about 30 feet outside a large window where the owner can observe and take pictures of the many unusual birds that visit her bird sanctuary. Total cost for materials and installation, about $1500.
