🌊 **Saltwater may be beautiful—but salt air is tough on your A/C!**

Tiny salt particles settle on the outdoor unit’s coils, fins, screws and electrical components, accelerating corrosion. Over time, that buildup can restrict airflow, reduce efficiency and shorten the life of your system.

Help protect your investment:

šŸ’§ Gently rinse the outdoor unit with fresh water every few months—never use a pressure washer
🌓 Keep plants and debris trimmed away for proper airflow
šŸ”§ Schedule regular professional maintenance to catch corrosion early
šŸ›”ļø Ask about corrosion-resistant equipment and protective options when replacing your system

A little coastal care can go a long way toward keeping your A/C running efficiently. The Chiller Millers are here to help! šŸ’™

🌊 **Is the Gulf really ā€œrecord coolā€? Sort of—but let’s explain.**

The Gulf’s surface is actually warmer than normal. Think of it like a swimming pool that feels warm when you dip your hand in—but becomes cooler when you dive deeper.

That is what is happening now. The warmth is mostly near the surface, while cooler water is sitting below it. This means the Gulf’s **ocean heat content**—the amount of warm water available at depth—is unusually low for the middle of August, based on a relatively short record.

Why does that matter? Hurricanes stir up the ocean beneath them. When warm water runs deep, a storm has a large supply of energy. When the warm layer is shallow, the storm can pull cooler water toward the surface, which may make rapid strengthening more difficult.

We also have several other factors working in our favor right now:

āœ… Strong wind shear that can tilt and disrupt developing storms
āœ… Saharan dust and dry air limiting thunderstorms
āœ… Less deep-ocean heat available across much of the Gulf

This is encouraging and helps explain our quiet season so far—but the Gulf is still warm enough to support a hurricane. These conditions can also change, especially as we move through September and October, when storms can develop closer to Florida.

So, no victory lap just yet. We stay **prepared, not panicked**—and enjoy the quiet while it lasts.

šŸŽ£ **Ryan’s Rookie Report:** A dirty filter is like trying to fish with seaweed wrapped around your prop—it slows everything down!

Changing a standard 1-inch filter about once a month helps your A/C breathe easier, improves airflow and keeps it from working harder than necessary. Check it even more often if you have pets, allergies or burn candles frequently, because hair, dander, dust and soot can clog it faster.

A clean filter is a small task that can make a big difference for your comfort, indoor air and A/C system! šŸ’™

šŸ¦—šŸŒ”ļø Did you know some crickets can act like tiny outdoor thermometers?

Crickets are cold-blooded, so temperature affects how quickly their muscles move. As the air warms, they chirp faster; when it cools, they slow down. A popular trick is to count one cricket’s chirps for about 14 seconds, then add 40 to estimate the temperature in Fahrenheit. For example, 30 chirps + 40 = approximately 70°F.

It’s real science—but not every species keeps the same beat, so the formula doesn’t work equally well with all our Florida crickets.

And with Southwest Florida scorching lately, ours have officially stopped counting. Their forecast is simply: **ā€œIt’s too hot. I’m calling Deep Blue!ā€** šŸ˜‚šŸ”„

When the crickets clock out, we clock in! šŸ’™ā„ļø

Think hiring a good technician is expensive? **Try hiring a bad one.**

Jim may not always give A/C advice in a suit…but when he does, it’s worth listening. šŸ˜‚

A cheap or inexperienced technician can leave you with:

šŸ”§ A misdiagnosed problem
šŸ’ø Unnecessary parts and repeat repair bills
⚔ Unsafe or improper electrical work
ā„ļø An inefficient system that still doesn’t cool correctly
šŸ“‹ Voided warranties or unpermitted work
🄵 Another breakdown during the hottest week of summer

The lowest price isn’t always the best value. Choose a licensed, insured and experienced HVAC company that diagnoses the actual problem, explains your options and stands behind its work.

⚔ **LIGHTNING BLITZ!** ⚔

Florida recorded an incredible **50,000 lightning bolts on August 19 alone!** All that lightning can also mean trouble for your A/C system.

A nearby strike can send a powerful electrical surge through your home, potentially damaging expensive A/C components such as:

⚔ Control boards
⚔ Compressors
⚔ Capacitors
⚔ Thermostats and communicating technology

A properly installed **A/C surge protector** helps divert excess voltage away from your equipment before it causes costly damage. It cannot prevent every possible lightning-related failure, but it provides an important extra layer of protection—especially during a Southwest Florida summer!

Protecting your system now could save you from a hot house and a much larger repair bill later.

šŸ› ļø **DUCT TAPE & DIAGNOSTICS WITH JIM BOB**

**MYTH:** ā€œI’m wasting money if I replace my A/C before it completely dies.ā€

Waiting until your system takes its final breath may actually cost you more—especially during a Southwest Florida summer.

Here’s why planning ahead can make sense:

šŸ”¹ **Older systems may cost more to operate.**
As efficiency declines, your A/C may run longer while delivering less comfort.

šŸ”¹ **Repairs can start adding up.**
Frequent breakdowns and expensive parts may make continued repairs less practical.

šŸ”¹ **Failures often happen during peak heat.**
That’s when systems work the hardest—and when appointment times and equipment choices may be more limited.

šŸ”¹ **Planning gives you more control.**
You have time to compare equipment, consider efficiency, review warranties and budget properly instead of making a rushed decision without air conditioning.

This doesn’t mean every older system should automatically be replaced. Its age, condition, repair history, efficiency and your family’s needs should all be considered. An honest evaluation can help determine whether repairing or replacing offers the better value.

Don’t wait until your comfort is being held together with duct tape! šŸ˜‚

🌊 **EL NIƑO UPDATE: FLORIDA, GET READY FOR A MOODY WINTER!**

Calling Florida weather unpredictable might be the understatement of the century! Just ask Florida State students, who experienced **hurricane days for Helene in September 2024 and snow days only four months later in January 2025.** Tallahassee officially received **1.9 inches of snow**, its second-highest two-day snowfall total on record. Hurricane days and snow days in the same academic year? That is a Florida phenomenon all by itself—and quite the hands-on weather education without ever leaving campus! šŸ˜‚

Now, another interesting weather pattern is developing. A strengthening El NiƱo is underway in the Pacific, with about a **69% chance of reaching record territory** later this fall or early winter.

The forecast mean is around **+2.65°C**, meaning the key region of the tropical Pacific used to measure El NiƱo could become approximately **2.65°C—or nearly 5°F—warmer than its long-term average**. That may not sound terribly impressive, but spread across such a massive area of ocean, it represents an enormous amount of extra heat and would surpass the strongest El NiƱo events in the historical record. Some models go even higher, but I’m sticking with the official forecast mean—not letting one overly excited model send us shopping for an ark just yet. šŸ˜‚

So, what could this mean for Florida?

šŸŒ€ **Hurricane season:** El NiƱo typically increases wind shear across the tropical Atlantic, making it more difficult for tropical systems to organize and strengthen. That certainly helps—but it does not make Florida hurricane-proof. It only takes one storm, so we still keep our plans in place.

šŸŒ§ļø **Fall and winter:** A stronger southern jet stream can steer more Gulf storm systems across Florida. Translation: a winter that may be **wetter, cloudier, cooler and stormier**, especially during the afternoon when additional clouds and rain help hold temperatures down.

ā›ˆļø **Severe weather:** Strong El NiƱo winters can increase Florida’s severe-weather and tornado potential. The powerful El NiƱos of **1982–83 and 1997–98** produced two of Florida’s most active tornado seasons. That does not guarantee an outbreak this winter, but it certainly gets this meteorologist’s attention.

ā„ļø **Could it snow in Florida?** North Florida always has a small opportunity if Gulf moisture and sufficiently cold air arrive at exactly the same time. Central and South Florida? Much more difficult—but not impossible. During the El NiƱo winter of **1977**, snowflakes were reported from Palm Beach and Miami all the way south to Homestead.

**The bottom line:** This El NiƱo could become historic, but it is still a forecast—and forecasts can change. For Florida, it could mean a wetter, cloudier, cooler and occasionally stormier fall and winter.

I’ll keep watching the Pacific and the jet stream so you don’t have to—and I promise not to declare a Florida blizzard six months in advance. šŸ˜‰

🄵 **Southwest Florida, this heat and humidity are no joke!**

With temperatures in the 90s and the heat index reaching **108–112°**, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop quickly—especially for children, older adults, pets and anyone working outdoors. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day and never leave anyone in a parked vehicle.

A working A/C isn’t just about comfort during extreme heat—it can be a matter of safety. **Deep Blue Air & Water has trucks on the road and technicians ready to help 24/7.** If your system is struggling or stops cooling, give us a call.
