This is the second brand new hot water heater. I’ve worked on in the last month with broken/damaged elements. The contractors and trades need to slow down and pay attention to what they’re doing. After installing a hot water tank, you need to fill it with water before powering it on. It looks like these hot water were left on without water for some time.

From what I’ve seen, the main symptom is the breakers for your hot water heater are tripping often. Also, your water may not be getting as hot as you think it should be. Most are set between 120 and 140°. This is likely due to only one element functioning properly. I’ve seen it so bad that the element eroded completely through and water leaked from the area where you connect power to the element.
This was on a new water heater mind you.
