I'm sure there's a lot of people by now that have these hanging on their house,and although their nice to look at,its a good indicator that there are some issues.We don't get these types of winters often,but when we do its good in a way,because this shows you if you need some maintenance.Now its not going to apply in every situation ,but more so then not,this is an indicator that you have a heat loss or a ventilation issue.When heat escapes into your eves,its melting the snow underneath,and without proper ventilation to exchange the air,to keep a balanced temperature between your outside air and inside your attic,this is what's causing the ice dam.It also applies to summer,because if your heat is escaping,then your cool air from your air conditioning is escaping to,causing your air conditioning to run harder,costing more then it should.These types of repairs are detailed,if you hire someone ,hire someone who understands how ventilation works,because you can have to much air infiltration in your eves,it will cause your roof vents to circumvent, if you don't understand these formulas,don't try to do it yourself,this is not a typical homeowner project,it takes years to understand how this works,just a little FYI.
