This past week on the farm, taking advantage of the dry weather!

And also weeding the only way I know how, in style as you guessed. Got a chance to play around with some new tech on the farm. Was able to capture some sweet drone footage running the 1921 David Bradley weeder. Definitely not the best drone pilot, but hey I’ll get there 😆. More fun footage coming later this summer. Also shoutout to Aaron for keeping the weeds down, and to Chloe for not running over the potatoes. They did a great job.

Another thing to share, some news for this week’s market. The Peoria riverfront market is being moved to the Northwoods mall this Saturday. Same time from 8-12. Just relocated for the boat races this weekend to make it easier for everyone.

Stay cool everybody, and I’ll see ya Saturday bright and early. Till the next adventure folks !

Happy Memorial weekend everyone!

Been a little busy, but everything on the farm is in full swing. Also good news to share. Spring veggies still coming on strong 🥬. Sweet corn making it’s appearance for the season, along with some strong potatoes getting to almost knee hight. Plants growing, sunshine and a little rain here and there. What more could a farmer ask for.

I’ve got some great news to share, starting THIS coming Saturday I’ll be at the Peoria Riverfront market from 8am till noon. So share the news along with family and friends in the area and let’s feed as many families as we can with some all natural, and clean food!

See ya Saturday folks 🤠

This weeks past farm adventure was the busiest weekend of the year!

Thousands of plants made there way outside into the ground. Live plants from the greenhouse, and seeds. Just about everything got planted in a matter of 48 hours. Got carried away and didn’t get to many photos this year 😅, but a good picture at the end of a very long weekend.

Now onto finishing up planting, wrapping up spring crop harvests, and putting up irrigation 😎 full time farming season is finally here. Thank you to all who came out to help this year.

Till the next adventure folks 🍅

This past weeks farm adventure, staying atop weeds

When I give farm tours one of the most asked questions is how I deal with weeds on the farm. Keeping things all naturally grown it’s done manually. With some old school tools. I’m proactive to the weeds, not reactive.

Target them in the thread stage, thank yourself later on. Weeds germinate every 72 hours, Routine is the key to stay ahead of it.

For the tools used I’ve got a single wheel, and double wheel weeder. Along with the trusty stirrup weeder. And everyone’s favorite weeder, from the 1920s the single row high crop David Bradley weeder. Makes quick work of them no matter how long the row is!

Until the next adventure folks!

Farming is best described as, a wild ride!

Going from sunny to outdoor planting, to wild storms. One day I’m working with the plants, next day I’m cleaning up splintered trees from the storm with the chainsaw. Different day, different job here on the farm.

Regardless of the chaos the plants are good, getting stronger by the day. More prep work for spring and planting greens everyday that it’s fit out.

The adventure continues, till next time!

Keeping it old school on this past weeks farm adventures.

Planted lots of potatoes over the weekend on the oldest piece of equipment on the farm. Both the potato cutter, and the planter date back to late 1800s. Still got a place on this farm in today’s modern world.

Then I put a slightly newer piece of equipment, circa 1920s era to the test for the first time since it’s been put back together. The Sulky plow! Made quick work to create a trench to help making planting asparagus easier. Couple hundred crowns put in every year. Best part is I didn’t have to dig any by hand this time!

Spring greens are popping up, greenhouse is humming along full of life. Always an adventure here on the farm. Till next time folks !

Dodging spring showers planting veggies 🥬, and flowers 🌷

Remains the motto on the farm as peppers and tomatoes make there appearance in the greenhouse. While outside lettuce, turnips, spinach and more emerges. With warmer days on the horizon many more crops will begin to show and by end of month harvest starting strong.

Clean healthy food coming your way soon 🫑 until then I’ll get back to planting! See ya on the next farm adventure folks.

Afternoon everyone!

Spring is finally here on the farm! Thousands of seeds being started in the greenhouse. The tractors coming out of their winter sleep back into the fields once again. The planter rolling over the soil setting the spring crops into the ground. Even brought in the big machines to level out some ground to continue expanding the farm.

Breathing life back into the farm is always an exciting experience. New crops to grow, more people to help feed. New experiences await for this season. Endless possibilities. Before we know it I’ll have crops growing out of the ground and farmer’s market season will be here.

Till the next adventure folks 🪴

This weeks adventure on the farm, back to the books 🎓

Today I got the chance to return to ISU to speak to the fruit and vegetable production class. We covered the story of the farm and tackled the bigger questions in farming. Beginning with how this wild adventure started all the way to what’s in store next. Looking closer into the local food system and how to create something when you don’t have much.

Six years ago I sat in their seats wondering how I was going to farm, what all that would look like. Today I was able to share my adventures, inspire them in their next chapter in life, and challenge them to always be learning, and that inspiration is around them.

Lots of great questions of business, the farm, and life. Who knows, maybe some day one of them will become a farmer to. It was truly a blast and I hope they enjoyed this moment as much as I did.

Till the next adventure folks 🎓
