The key to long-lasting window box color is creating the right growing environment. Quality window boxes with proper drainage and consistent moisture help plants thrive through the season.

Here are a few reliable bloomers for late summer into fall:
Petunias –Trailing varieties spill over the edges for a lush, continuous display.
*Tip: Deadhead lightly and feed every 2–3 weeks.
Geraniums –Upright, structured, and heat-tolerant; ideal anchor plants.
*Tip: Let soil dry slightly between waterings.
Calibrachoa (Million Bells) –Small, petunia-like blooms with abundant, cascading color.
*Tip: Use well-draining mix and keep roots evenly moist, not soggy.
Verbena –Heat-tolerant trailers that flower into early fall.
*Tip: Grow in full sun and trim back mid-season to refresh blooms.
Lantana –Vibrant clusters that attract pollinators and perform well in warm climates.
*Tip: Provide full sun and excellent drainage; avoid overwatering.

Success in container gardening begins beneath the surface: when roots thrive, the entire display flourishes.

One of the most common mistakes in container gardening is planting without considering soil temperature. Containers heat up and cool down more quickly than ground soil, which can stress young plants, delay flowering, and weaken root systems.

How to avoid this mistake:
Wait until nighttime temperatures are consistently mild, and use high-quality, well-draining containers with the appropriate liner and soil mix. This helps regulate moisture and temperature, allowing roots to establish properly. Transplanting in the evening, when most plants shift from food production to growth, can help them develop stronger root systems with less stress than repotting during the day.

How to address the issue:
If your plants are struggling because they were planted too early, stabilize their conditions by moving the containers to a shed or garage until evening temperatures rise. Replace any severely stressed plants once the weather improves.

To protect roots and promote strong growth, choose containers that provide a stable environment. Materials like our fiberglass, fiberstone, and GFRC offer excellent insulation, consistent moisture retention, and impressive durability in a lightweight design.

The most meaningful audience for your garden is the one looking out from within. Our “Inside-Out” perspective shifts the focus from how your home appears to the world to how the world feels from your windows and doors.

Discover the full “Inside-Out” approach in our latest blog.

For decades, the "window box" has been categorized strictly under the umbrella of curb appeal—a gift of color and texture offered to the neighbors and the street. But we advocate for a more intimate perspective. We believe the most important audience for your garden is the person living behind...
