Our thanks to Sickles HS National Honor Society members who volunteered at VISTA Gardens yesterday morning. They created soil blocks for seeding with Mark, identified and removed invasive plants with Elizabeth, pruned and trained vines with Roberta, and some learned about propagation from Sue. A "shout out" to Mike for coordinating it all!

Because a single native plant species usually does not dominate an area, there is biodiversity.

The ecosystem is in balance because each plant and animal species is constrained by natural factors, such as plant diseases, predation by insects and other animals and climate.

Florida has more than 4,200 plant species growing outside of cultivation, according to the Atlas of Florida Vascular Plants. Out of those 4,200 species, nearly 3,000 are considered native. The majority are terrestrial plants: they live on dry land. There are also hundreds of aquatic plant species...
