There's a point in every build when the house starts protecting itself.

At this ADU in Wareham, Massachusetts, the walls are framed and wrapped in sheathing, and the roof framing is going up. It's starting to look less like a project and more like a place someone will live.

For the family waiting on it, this stage brings a kind of relief. Every step toward a closed-in shell means less exposure to New England weather and more work that can happen inside, whatever the forecast says.

Who will live in the ADU?

Before choosing an ADU floor plan, agree on who it needs to work for.

That answer shapes the rooms, privacy, access, and budget.

A recent BuildX conversation explored several possible family uses for a second home. The homeowner was still gathering information rather than committing to a project.

That's a good time to get specific.

Ask the people involved:

• Who would move in first?
• What would they need to live comfortably?
• Which future uses are realistic possibilities?
• Who would make the decisions if those plans changed?

A home designed around one person's routines may need a different layout for two people. An extra bathroom might matter more to one household than a larger living room.
