Burglarproofing your home

Home Improvement Solutions and Electrical Service Now can come to your home and help you burglarproof your home.

Home Improvement Solutions will install a sturdy deadbolt lock on every door to the outside. This should include the door into the house from the garage.

Always keep your house looking lived-in when you’re away.

Have arrangements made for the lawn to be mowed, stop mail delivery, install timers for selected lights, leave a car in the driveway, and leave drapes or shades open at least a bit. Electrical Service Now can install your timers for your lights.

Advertise prominently any home security system you have installed. You might think about putting up signs even if you don’t have a system.

Examine your landscaping. Trim shrubs and trees near windows and doors that provide hiding places for burglars, and prune limbs that serve as ladders to upper windows.

Purchase a metal bar or a solid-wood dowel to insert in the tracking of sliding glass doors. We will be happy to pick this up for you, this will prevent anyone from opening them.

Put your street number, not your name, on your mailbox.

Give a spare key to a trusted neighbor or nearby friend.

Thieves know all about fake rocks and other hide-a-key tricks.

In any room with window bars, make sure at least one has a quick-release mechanism. Replace or retrofit as needed.

Install motion-sensing floodlights in the backyard.

Did you know we do Popcorn Ceiling Removal?

Why Should I Remove a Popcorn Ceiling?

That extremely textured ceiling in your home that resembles popcorn, known as a popcorn ceiling, may have some significant issues that warrant removal from your home. Although popcorn ceilings were a common interior decorating surface for a number of years, homeowners eventually realized that some serious problems can occur with this ceiling texture.

As you explore the task of removing your popcorn ceiling, consider important reasons and cautions for removing a popcorn ceiling to determine whether you should proceed.

1 .Asbestos

It’s possible that your popcorn ceiling contains asbestos, which can cause serious health issues if you disturb the particles. The process of spraying on the textured popcorn ceiling involved applying coatings that contained asbestos. Any popcorn ceilings that predate 1978 likely contain asbestos. Because you may not be able to determine the exact date on which your popcorn ceiling was installed in your home, you should assume that it contains asbestos. Even popcorn ceilings installed into the 1980s contained asbestos.

If you leave a popcorn ceiling undisturbed, it will not pose health risks. It’s the process of disturbance or damage that causes asbestos fibers to fly into the air. Once the fibers become airborne, it’s possible to breathe them into the lungs, which can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma or asbestosis.

If you decide to remove a popcorn ceiling, test the materials for lead prior to proceeding with the work. If testing indicates asbestos, Home Improvement Solutions can remove the popcorn ceiling and abate the asbestos from your home.

2. Hard to Paint

The extreme texture of a popcorn ceiling, with deep ridges and valleys, makes it exceedingly difficult to paint. The most common technique for painting a ceiling involves using a paint roller on an extension handle. With a popcorn ceiling, a paint roller does not have sufficient nap to effectively apply paint to the valleys of the textured ceiling. This leaves painting the ceiling by paint brush, which would be a time-consuming process.

3. Dated

Popcorn ceilings were popular in home design between the 1950s and 1980s. Because of this strong prevalence during this era, the presence of popcorn ceilings in a home today creates a dated appearance to the interior décor. The appearance of dated décor can be even more pronounced if walls have color and the ceiling remains stark white.

4. Hard to Repair and Maintain

A popcorn ceiling does require regular maintenance to keep it attractive. Because of the crevices and recesses of the ceiling, it can become dirty and dusty. To keep the ceiling clean, use a step ladder and a brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner to brush the surfaces of the ceiling to remove dust. Take care as you perform these cleaning tasks, because if you disturb any of the popcorn textures, you may be releasing asbestos into the air.

If damage occurs to the popcorn texture, call Home Improvement Solutions for assistance due to the possibility of asbestos contamination. We will need to remove the textured material from around the hole, sand the drywall and fill the space with new texturing material. After the texturing material dries, repaint the ceiling to match the surrounding ceiling.

5. Hard to Remove - Hire a Pro

If you decide the popcorn ceiling needs to go, it’s prudent to hire a professional to assist you with this potentially dangerous task.

After deciding it’s time to ditch the popcorn ceiling and bring your home décor up to meet current trends. Let Home Improvement Solutions help you need to do the job correctly. We have a wealth of information to offer regarding this common home environment risk as well.

Space Heater Safety

Small space heaters are typically used when the main heating system is inadequate or when central heating is too costly to install or operate. In some cases, small space heaters can be less expensive to use if you only want to heat one room or supplement inadequate heating in one room. They can also boost the temperature of rooms used by individuals who are sensitive to cold, especially elderly persons, without overheating your entire home.

Space heater capacities generally range between 10,000 Btu and 40,000 Btu per hour, and commonly run on electricity, propane, natural gas, and kerosene (see wood and pellet heating for information on wood and pellet stoves).

Although most space heaters work by convection (the circulation of air in a room), some rely on radiant heating. Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly heats objects and people within their line of sight, and are a more efficient choice when you will be in a room for only a few hours and can stay within the line of sight of the heater. They can also be more efficient when you will be using a room for a short period because they save energy by directly heating the occupant of the room and the occupant's immediate surroundings rather than the whole room.

Safety is a top consideration when using space heaters. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that more than 25,000 residential fires every year are associated with the use of space heaters, resulting in more than 300 deaths. In addition, an estimated 6,000 people receive hospital emergency room care for burn injuries associated with contacting the hot surfaces of room heaters, mostly in non-fire situations.

When buying and installing a small space heater, follow these guidelines:
•Only purchase newer model heaters that have all of the current safety features. Make sure the heater carries the Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) label.
•Choose a thermostatically controlled heater, because they avoid the energy waste of overheating a room.
•Select a heater of the proper size for the room you wish to heat. Do not purchase oversized heaters. Most heaters come with a general sizing table.
•Locate the heater on a level surface away from foot traffic. Be especially careful to keep children and pets away from the heater.

Vented and Unvented Combustion Space Heaters

Space heaters are classified as vented and unvented or "vent-free." Unvented combustion units are not recommended for use inside your home, because they introduce unwanted combustion products into the living space—including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and water vapor—and deplete air in the space. Most states have banned unvented kerosene heaters for use in the home and at least five have banned the use of unvented natural gas heaters.

Vented units are designed to be permanently located next to an outside wall, so that the flue gas vent can be installed through a ceiling or directly through the wall to the outside. Look for sealed combustion or "100% outdoor air" units, which have a duct to bring outside into the combustion chamber. Sealed combustion heaters are much safer to operate than other types of space heaters, and operate more efficiently because they do not draw in the heated air from the room and exhaust it to the outdoors. They are also less likely to backdraft and adversely affect indoor air quality.

Less expensive (and less efficient) units use the room air for combustion. They do not have a sealed glass front to keep room air away from the fire and should not be confused with a sealed combustion heater.

In addition to the manufacturer's installation and operating instructions, you should follow these general safety guidelines for operating any combustion space heater:
•For liquid-fueled heaters, use only the approved fuel. Never use gasoline! Follow the manufacturer's fueling instructions. Never fill a heater that is still hot. Do not overfill the heater -- you must allow for the expansion of the liquid. Only use approved containers clearly marked for that particular fuel, and store them outdoors.
•Have vented space heaters professionally inspected every year. If the heater is not vented properly, not vented at all, or if the vent is blocked, separated, rusted, or corroded, dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO) can enter the home causing sickness and death. CO also can be produced if the heater is not properly set up and adjusted for the type of gas used and the altitude at which it is installed.

Electric Space Heaters

Electric space heaters are generally more expensive to operate than combustion space heaters, but they are the only unvented space heaters that are safe to operate inside your home. Although electric space heaters avoid indoor air quality concerns, they still pose burn and fire hazards and should be used with caution.

For convection (non-radiant) space heaters, the best types incorporate a heat transfer liquid, such as oil, that is heated by the electric element. The heat transfer fluid provides some heat storage, allowing the heater to cycle less and to provide a more constant heat source.

When buying and installing an electric space heater, you should follow these general safety guidelines:
•Electric heaters should be plugged directly into the wall outlet. If an extension cord is necessary, use the shortest possible heavy-duty cord of 14-gauge wire or larger. Always check and follow any manufacturer’s instructions pertaining to the use of extension cords.
•Buy a unit with a tip-over safety switch, which automatically shuts off the heater if the unit is tipped over.

Adapting Homes to Seniors' Changing Needs

More Americans are choosing to "age in place." That is, they opt to stay in their homes rather than move to alternative retirement settings.

But that often means they must modify their home, so it's not a danger to their safety and health when their physical abilities change. Please contact Home Improvement Solutions @ (919) 363-8400 for a time to schedule a walk through of your home or business.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one-third of Americans age 65 and over fall each year. The CDC adds that environmental factors lead to about half of all falls that occur at home. In addition to tripping hazards and poor lighting, these factors include a lack of needed modifications, such as bathroom grab bars, handicapped showers, stair railings and ramps. The organization offers a checklist to make sure an older adult's home is as safe as possible.

Home modifications help seniors maintain quality of life. They often prevent injuries that lead to a loss of independence and early admission to an assisted living or long-term care facility.

The following are examples of commonly recommended modifications:
•Install grab bars for toilets and tubs and install a walk-in tub and/or tub seat
•Remove unnecessary throw rugs and fasten down rugs or floor runners to prevent slipping
•Move furniture to create clear walking paths
•Keep objects off the floor and coil or secure cords to the wall to prevent tripping
•Replace doorknobs with lever door handles
•Apply non-slip tape on uncarpeted indoor and outdoor steps
•Replace standard light switches with rocker-style switches
•Increase the width of doorways and hallways to accommodate wheelchairs and, where possible, lower sinks and countertops
•Move often-used items to lower cabinets to avoid the need for step stools
•Repair or replace loose handrails and install adequate lighting in stairways
•Install an elevator or chair lift
•Install an elevated dishwasher or one with drawers for easy access
•Replace old stoves with induction cook tops to help prevent burns
•Replace ceramic tile floors with hardwood or vinyl for safe standing

Shedding Light on Home Modification

When modifying a home for a senior, don't forget the importance of good lighting. Seniors need two to three times as much light in order to see as well as younger people.

Good lighting -- in the form of natural light -- provides seniors safety and other advantages:
•Sunlight provides a good dose of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb more calcium to strengthen teeth and bones. Choose window treatments that let in sunlight, without glare, to enhance the health of seniors, many of who get outside less than they used to.
•Daylight also improves psychological health. It lessens the energy-zapping effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and other forms of depression.
