Hurricane Season in Florida: What Every Homeowner Should Be Doing Right Now
Living in Central Florida, we all know the drill: hurricane season hits, and suddenly everyone’s rushing for gas, bottled water, and plywood. But the truth is, proper storm prep starts long before the radar lights up.
At HPI Services LLC, we’ve seen firsthand how a bit of early action can save you major stress — and money — down the line. Whether you’re a first-time homeowner or just need a refresher, here’s what to be thinking about before the next storm warning hits your phone.

1. Check What Could Fly
Those patio chairs, grills, yard tools, loose pavers, anything not tied down can become a projectile in strong winds. Take a walk around your yard and think like the wind. Can it move? If yes, it needs to be secured or stored.
We’ve also had plenty of last-minute calls for help with rotting fences, half-attached sheds, or unstable tree limbs. If something already looks like it’s about to go,assume it will. Better to handle it now than clean it out of your neighbor’s pool later.

2. Gutters, Roofs & Drainage — The Unsung Heroes
You don’t notice them when they work. But clogged gutters or damaged shingles can lead to real damage when the rain doesn’t let up. Now’s a good time to get debris off the roof (we can help with that), make sure downspouts are clear, and double-check the grading around your foundation so water flows away, not toward.
⸻
3. Test Run Your Generator (Before the Power’s Out)
If you own a generator, don’t assume it’s ready to go just because it worked last year. Fire it up. Check the oil. Make sure cords aren’t dry-rotted or chewed through. And while you’re at it, stock up on fuel (gas or propane) and store it safely.
If your generator’s giving you trouble, I also offer small engine servicing and seasonal maintenance. I’ve helped clients get generators, chainsaws, lawn mowers and pressure washers back in action right when they needed them most.

4. Water Supply: Wells, Pumps & Backup Plans
If you’re on a well and the power goes out — no electricity means no water. Have a plan in place for storing potable water ahead of a storm. Consider investing in a manual pump backup, water jugs, or even just filling bathtubs before the storm hits. If you’ve got a family or pets, it adds up quickly.

5. Supplies You’ll Thank Yourself For Having
• Extra batteries & flashlights (headlamps are even better)
• Gasoline & oil for tools/generators
• Propane for your grill
• A cooler and ice packs for fridge items
• Tarp and plastic sheeting in case of roof leaks
• Basic tools: hammer, nails, duct tape, screwdrivers
A good prep list isn’t about panicking — it’s about planning. You don’t need everything at once, but when you chip away early, you avoid the mad dash when storms are already on their way.
