Mediterranean Fruit Trees

Mediterranean Fruit Trees Hi my name is Bryan!

I am an indoor grower with experience in growing warm weather plants that bear fruit, but are not considered ‘tropical’ and will survive our Baltimore winters!

Hass avocados are usually the kind you buy at the grocery store, although if you read up on avocado trees, you will see that they are not what you call ‘true-to-seed’… meaning every single avocado grown on each tree tastes a bit different from every other avocado on that tree… so to get a tree to grow the same-tasting avocado on every branch, you must ‘graft’ a branch onto a root stock. In other words, you must chop down the stalk of one of my avocado trees in order to fasten a Hass avocado branch onto it, where it will then grow into a tree that only produces the the same Hass avocado on every single branch. It is easy but requires patience. So if you are willing to do this, then one of my avocado trees would provide a great healthy root stock for this process… however, if you are growing for the looks of this beautiful tree with big beautiful leaves, it would make an excellent patio plant and you would even have some bragging rights to visitors that you have acquired an avocado tree which you certainly will not find at Lowe’s or Home Depot!

Key limes are also the kind you usually find at a grocery store… however, every lime on every Key lime tree will taste great, even grown from seed or cutting! The special thing about lime trees is that they will do great indoors by a sunny window in a medium-sized container during the winter and love a lot of sunlight inside or outside in the summer. They grow very slowly and can remain as a small bush for many years, so they are very manageable indoors. They also do not shed a lot of leaves, do not make a mess, and do not attract a lot of bugs. My key lime trees are very green, very healthy, and very thick and bushy… they were all taken as cuttings from the same mother plant 1 1/2 years ago, and will most definitely be fruit-bearing by THIS summer!

All of these fig trees are currently bearing fruit… they are about 3 years old, 3+ ft tall with very thick trunks because of all the repeated toppings in order to create a magnificent canopy. I even planted one in my yard two years ago, and it has survived two winters in Baltimore, using only a cover to protect from frost. They are very drought tolerant for hot summers. They also don’t require heavily nutritious soil. I have been occasionally picking a fig here and there for a little snack while I am gardening and the fruit is delicious! They grow to about 10-15 ft tall and they grow fast!

As you can see, pomegranate trees are already bearing fruit… they are all around 6 feet tall, very green, and very bushy and thick. Pomegranate trees are very cold hardy down to around 15 degrees F. These are organically grown, no liquid or bottled fertilizers have been used up to this point. They are all grown from cuttings coming from the same strong ‘mother’ plant, taken about 1 1/2 years ago. The pomegranate grows to a height of 12–20' and a spread of 12–20' at maturity.

Arbequina olive trees grow very slowly but are much easier to keep healthy than pomegranate trees. These olive trees are all approximately 2 years old, and they are very healthy and green, grown almost their whole lives on a flood-and-drain table. Arbequina olive trees are more cold hardy than most other olive trees, and will only need to be covered during the winter in Baltimore while they are young but will not need any cold protection once they are bigger and more mature. These are also organically grown up to this point. These olive trees are 1-2 feet tall. Arbequina olive trees grow to about 15-20 ft tall.
