I had a question asked of me the other day.

What are the white flowering trees that look so pretty is time of year? I had to ask a couple of questions in order to pick which tree she was asking about but soon settled on Japanese tree lilac. This is the first picture. These trees are the last lilac to bloom. The bloom is white or cream colored and is fragrant. They make great smaller trees, usually getting to a height of around 25 feet and 12 to 15 feet wide.

The second option is a much larger tree. This is the Catalpa tree. This tree has large heart shaped leaves and can grow to 70 feet tall. Some refer to this tree as the bean tree for its long green bean shaped seed pods.

The final picture is of something that Jordan's has in front of our building. The legendary and rare Petunia tree. This is a striking tree like collection of Giant Pink petunias. It never fails to get noticed and we have enjoyed growing it for several years.

This is a quick run-down of June flowering trees. We have all of them in stock now. That includes the Giant Pink petunias for constructing a petunia tree.

Monday is Memorial Day.

For several staff members at Jordan's Memorial Day marks the first day off in weeks.
We look at it as a day to recover and spend some time with people we care about. As I was thinking about all the things I could do with my time off, I wondered about why there was a Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a day set aside by our government to honor and remember all of those military veterans who died protecting the freedoms and principles that we hold dear today.

While it is easy to overlook this and just enjoy the time off, one trip to Arlington National Cemetery is enough to bring into sharp focus just how many people have paid the price for these principles.

Please enjoy the day with family and friends but reserve a minute or two to remember the true cost and meaning of the day.

Memorial Day is fast approaching. There is still time to have a planter custom made to your specifications.

This seemed like a great time to show case the greenhouse gnome's talents. These are just some of the floral creations she has put together in the last few days.

Let us know what you think of them.

Thanks for your continued support.

JUST A FEW UPDATES

First thing on today's list is a reminder that the perennial sale is still in progress through this weekend. It ends Sunday at 4 pm.

Next, we are excited to inform you that the sweet potatoes have arrived and are available to be picked up at the nursery.

Due to a high demand for asparagus plants, we had to replenish our supply. These new plants are now in stock and include the added bonus of having the additional variety called Purple Passion asparagus. This was a variety we were unable to get with our initial order.

Last but not least our instore Gnome wants to introduce you to a line of interesting plants. We have 4 different varieties of carnivorous plants for sale. The one pictured is a Venus Flytrap. It is probably the best known of this plant group. These are very interesting and work well in terrariums.

Have a great weekend!
If it doesn't rain too much, we expect to have another fun and full one.

UNBELIEVEABLE!

This has never happened before.

This week Jordan's received a new shipment of perennials. This is not unusual for the nursery. What happened next is the surprising part.

Only a few days before Mother's Day and Jordan's is going to have a perennial sale. Let me repeat that Jordan's is having a perennial sale at this unheard-of time of year.

The sale starts on Saturday, but for our Facebook friends it starts on Friday.
Not all perennials will be on sale. The ones on sale are in a separate area. Regular price is $18.95. The sale price is $15.00. As a special bonus if you purchase 5 or more the price will be $12.50 per plant.

I have never seen this before and I believe you will agree.

WARNING: THIS POST IS FOR PLANT GEEKS AND PEOPLE WHO REALLY LIKE LILACS.

Let me start of by saying this lilac variety is not available at Jordans. I just thought that the story was interesting. The picture is from a collection and as you can see it is past its prime but still very fragrant.

This variety is called Anabel. It is a very early blooming variety with a double pink flower. Why do I find it interesting?

This variety was selected around 1957 by a farmer and former mayor of La Porte City. So, it has local ties. Roy Hawkins was the person who selected this variety. He named it after his wife and the library in downtown La Porte is also named after her.

You don't have to work for Proven Winners to be an amateur plant breeder, You never know when you can run across an interesting plant story close to home.

I'll introduce you to other varieties of lilacs that Jordans does carry. Maybe even find a couple of other stories to go with them.

Don't forget to stop and smell the lilacs this time of year. One of life's little pleasures.

I'm a little late on this one, but the blooms are still great.
This is Jane magnolia. Along with Jane we also carry her sisters Ann and Betty.
These magnolia hybrids are part of a magnolia breeding program from the National Arboretum.

The National Arboretum developed the Little Girl series of magnolias. They tend to bloom 2 to 4 weeks later than other magnolias. In Iowa this trait makes them less prone to flower frost damage. The plants are also smaller making them a better choice for smaller yards.

Have a great planting weekend.

Reminder we have seed potatoes, onion plants and sets. We have bare root strawberries in the store and some planted in pots in the greenhouse. We have been disappointed with bare root asparagus last few years. We switched suppliers and man are we happy with the results. As you can see the crowns are the size of a golf ball and bundles of 25 are bigger than a softball. We sell bare root by the plant or bundle whatever you are looking for. Stop in we can’t wait to help with gardening, tree, shrubs and perennials we have it all!
