We fit some custom single hung sashes last week. I often find it to be a wise choice to scribe our sashes to the openings before we move to glazing and painting. It ensures a perfect fit and that everything lines up right. You will see that the meeting rails are right in line in the pics.

We installed a bunch of aluminum storm windows on this 1740’s farmhouse last week. The customer badly wanted to save her windows but improve the energy efficiency of them. These two track Energy Star rated storms were the perfect option. They look great and the home should feel far less drafty this winter!

Some TDL (true divided lite) wood storms with wavy glass from The first two pics give you an after and before view of the windows. You certainly cannot say that the storms harm the aesthetic of this home.

Mostly posting this because I liked the light and shadows in the first picture. Fitting some TDL (true divided lite) storms today. The most important step in storms like these is taking great measurements before you build the storms. When you do TDL windows, you really need to start with measuring the existing sashes first so that you can ensure that your muntins line up properly. It pays to size your muntins slightly smaller than the prime window so that you have less double vision going on. Also, ere on the side if setting the storms low since it tends to line things up a bit better. The double vision is always a concern with TDL storms but the depth they bring to the exterior aesthetic is incredible. I’m looking forward to seeing these installed.

There are few things I want to your draw attention in this post.
1. Flip between the first two images. Can you really say one is less attractive than the other? Most worry that their storm window will harm the aesthetic appeal of their home. Our wood storm windows should challenge that concern.
2. Devil in the details. If you look at the last images, you will see some small details that make a difference. From double pegged joints to deep chamfers to fit a specific type of casing, we know how to build and install the best wood storms you will find.
3. Bold Colors. This is just a PSA that bold colors on windows can really take things to a whole new level. This green is wild and I love it in this context.

Outside and inside view of our combination wood storm windows with the interior removable glass and screen inserts. This is a great example of dealing with your storm windows first before you take care of the restoration of the windows. As you can see, the storms are black but the prime windows are currently white. Next year, will be pulling the prime windows and restoring them with a black finish on the exterior. With the storms in place, you don’t need to worry about the main windows and you can deal with them when you are ready.

Photos from our Storm install yesterday. Can you even tell the home has storm windows?! This home has TDL (true divided lite) wood storm windows. They went with 6 over 6 on the street side and 1 over 1 on the sides. Since the home is on a busy road in the city of Alexandria, they had us glaze them with laminated glass for the improved sound insulation. So happy with the outcome. They look great and the homeowner brought us inside to hear the clock ticking in their living room. Sometimes it isn’t about what you can see or hear but instead what you can’t see or hear. Mission accomplished.

Shutter hinges can be a problem for storm windows. Storms are typically installed in the space the shutter is supposed to occupy when it is closed (hence the name blind, aka shutter, stop on a western casing setup). A nice fix to keep the hinges from getting in the way of the storm is to remove them and slightly bevel the mortises. It is surprisingly simple and effective.
