"Without rain, there is no life."

The cucamelons were done. I told myself this very thing last night. I almost cut them back to make way for a round of fall peas on the trellis. I was being feasted on by mosquitoes, sweat bees and a host of other tiny biting insects so I opted to adandon that task.

I told my friends there would be no more cucamelon deliveries this season. They were done. I had diligently picked the last of the cute like fruit from the vine last night. We had already exhausted those from the lower arch of the trellis. So, catefully standing on the tops of the raised beds, admist the pollinators I carefully plucked every last ripe little green ball of joy.

Secretly, I somewhat welcomed the end of their season. I had washed and removed the flowered ends of at least 10,000 (its cucamelon math, don't judge) this season and was thoroughly over it.

And then. It rained.

Not enough rain to measure. Any drop that had made it into the rain gague stood no chance in the afternoon heat. But it was enough to breathe life back into the plants. And these were just what I could easily reach and pocket as I was unprepared for a harvest walk. Now, I do water regularly and quite diligently. But, friends, there is nothing like rain water 💙

"Good food is all the sweeter when shared with good friends!"

Got all these veggies washed up and ready to make some "Garden Goodie Bags" for my coworkers. As much as I love growing and eating my own food, I love sharing it even more!

Step 1 - raid your garden for some eggplant, summer squash, onion, garlic, potatoes and pablanos.

Step 2 - wash and dice all your veggies.

Step 3 - toss in some EVOO, season with salt and pepper and add some mild italian sausage.

Step 4 - roast all that delicious in a 400 degree oven until you have a pan of golden browned garden goodness.

Step 5 - dive in and remember why you spend months planning, seed starting, planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding and waiting!

Step 6 - repeat weekly until winter!

Homegrown dinners are the best! We had this lovely southern tomato pie courtesy of some costoluto genovese beauties, a candy onion and holy basil. The blistered shish*to peppers with garlic aioli was the best side dish I've ever tasted. Pure bliss right here my friends.

What did you grow for dinner?

I have been searching for a small, personal sized snacking melon for the past three years

We've tried the tigger melon, kiku chrysanthemum and now this kajari melon. There was no flavor at all in this beautiful little fella.

Let me know below what small melons your family loves, we will give anything a try!

I'm like a kid at Christmas today. Beyond excited to give my dehydrator its first run!! Homegrown basil 💚 It's the simple things, like the prospect of putting up all my own spices, that bring so much joy to my heart.

No chemicals, no toxins, no pesticides, nothing... So I had to learn not to freak out when these guys started crawling in my sink. It's worth it though, knowing what I am eating, and doing it as close to natural as possible. (Next round we will try row covers.)

My first kiku chrysanthemum melon! Super cute little melon, almost too cute to eat. The taste was very mild with hints of cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon with a slightly peppery aftertaste. Definitely an interesting little fella!
