Heliopsis or Helianthus? 🌻 They’re not the same!

At first glance, it’s easy to see why these two get confused. Both have cheerful, sunflower-like blooms and put on a beautiful show in the summer garden.

Heliopsis (False Sunflower)
• A hardy perennial in our area
• Long blooming, especially when deadheaded
• Generally has sturdy, upright stems
• Native to much of North America
• Loved by bees, butterflies and other pollinators

Helianthus (Sunflower)
• Includes both annual and perennial species
• Many perennial varieties are hardy right here in Zone 5
• Depending on the species, plants can range from fairly compact to very tall
• Wonderful for pollinators, with seeds that also provide food for birds

So how do you tell them apart? It can actually be tricky! Flower size isn’t always a reliable clue because some perennial Helianthus look remarkably similar to Heliopsis.

And just to make things a little more confusing, both names come from the Greek helios, meaning sun. ☀️

The good news? You really can’t go wrong with either one for lots of late-summer color!
