“Why is my deck gray? What does this mean? How do I fix it? So many questions!”
If you’ve had these concerns/thoughts, not to worry! This is natural occurrence and can be remedied.
Woods commonly used in decks, fencing, etc will patina over time. This process is a result of continued exposure to the elements and a natural aging process of cut/milled wood.
If you apply your stain/topcoat directly to the top of the deck as seen in slide 1, with no prep, you’ll likely be doing it again as soon as next spring as the patina will act as a barrier between the topcoat and the wood itself.
This particular deck is new and had aged for almost a year reaching this state; which is preferred and recommended.
Slide 3 you can see the difference between the patinaed wood and the wood that has been cleaned and prepped to accept stain!
The results, a rich and uniform finish that will be readily maintained and last for years to come!
