Being a leader in construction isn't easy.

There's a lot of weight on your shoulders every day. So a few months back, we decided to carve out time each quarter to step away from daily grind and just have fun together.

This quarter, we took the leadership team to Beat the Bomb. And we picked the paint bomb room on purpose.

It's hard to put into words what that kind of time does for a group until you're standing in a room trying not to get covered in paint while laughing with the people you work alongside every day. These are the folks carrying a lot of the load at A&K.

We're grateful for the leaders we get to work with and help lead this company alongside.

The water holding tank at Metrolina Christian Academy needed some serious attention.

The original coating had delaminated, and rust had spread across the surface. The tank needed a full rebuild from the metal out. We started with a media blast to strip everything down to bare steel, then applied a clear epoxy primer, followed by one coat of epoxy and one coat of urethane.

That new coating system is built to hold up against moisture, wear, and time. And the tank's already back in service.

Projects like this one don't get a lot of attention. But a school's athletic program depends on that water supply, and it'll keep running because the coating underneath it was done right.

We're glad Metrolina Christian Academy brought us in.

Most industrial facility owners don't think about their coatings until something is visibly wrong.

But by then, corrosion has already reached the substrate. And you're not just repainting anymore. You're looking at structural repairs, equipment replacement, and unplanned downtime that could have been avoided.

Because the coating on your facility is a barrier. And when that barrier is properly maintained, it keeps corrosion away from the steel and equipment running the way it should.

A regular maintenance schedule costs a fraction of what emergency repairs do. The facilities that stay ahead of it treat paint the same way they treat any other maintenance system: proactively, on a schedule, before something shows up on a work order.

We just wrapped up the exterior repaint of the Hampton Inn at 6700 Phillips Place.

It's easy to underestimate what a fresh coat of paint does for a hotel. But think about it from a guest's perspective. The exterior is the first thing they see when they pull in, often after a long drive. A clean, well-maintained façade shows guests the property is cared for, and that influences how they feel about their stay.

And that's the real value of a project like this. It's not maintenance for the sake of maintenance. It's the property's first impression.

Exterior repaints on an active hospitality property require real coordination. Guests are coming and going, operations don't stop, and the work still has to look right when it's done.

But our A&K team handled it well, and the finished product shows.

Not every painting contractor knows how to handle commercial work.

We say this because the skills needed for residential work don't translate directly to commercial projects. Surface prep protocols are stricter, and code requirements vary by facility type. Site conditions on active commercial properties require different coordination than residential work.

There are even more differences, like the coatings, the application standards, and even the level of liability. That's the actual gap between contractors who've worked mostly residential versus those who've spent years on commercial and industrial projects.

If you're looking to hire a commercial painter, this experience gap is worth paying attention to. Here's what can produce better project outcomes when you choose the right contractor for your commercial work: https://akpainting.com/benefits-of-local-commercial-painting-contractors/

It was National Donut Day, and the A&K team made sure to celebrate it right.

We grabbed a couple of boxes, put everyone's donut knowledge to the test with some National Donut Day trivia, and gave people a chance to step away from their desks for a few minutes to spend some time doing something other than work. Congratulations to Alex Wilson for taking home the trivia crown.

The celebration extended beyond the office, too. PM Richard Ho picked up the donuts and dropped some off with a few customers along the way.

A lot of what makes A&K a good place to work doesn't show up in the work itself. It shows up in the breaks, the laughs, and the fact that someone always remembers to bring the donuts.

Now the real question: What's your go-to donut?

Ten years with the same company means something.

Jennifer Gonzalez has been part of the A&K team for a decade. She’s grown into a role that sits at the intersection of workforce development and accounting, two areas that rarely appear in the same job description. This makes her a unique asset to our team.

What stands out about Jennifer is how she shows up. She's focused, dependable, and thinking about the people around her, not just the task in front of her. That consistency is harder to find than most people realize.

Ten years is a long time in any industry. In the trades, where turnover is real and good people move around, staying put and growing where you're planted says a lot about a person and about the place they choose to stay.

Jennifer, thank you for a decade of showing up the right way.

Reactive painting costs more than planned painting. Facilities just don't feel it until the bill arrives.

When a coating starts to fail, it's rarely just a cosmetic problem. Surfaces that go unprotected long enough can develop corrosion, substrate damage, and compliance issues that take a lot more than a fresh coat to fix. The work and cost increase. And the timeline is never convenient.

That's why facility maintenance painting belongs in the annual budget. Not as a line item to cut, but as one of the more straightforward ways to protect the value of the building. Scheduled coatings keep surfaces in spec, help meet safety and compliance requirements, and give facility managers a cost they can plan around instead of one that shows up without warning.

We put together a resource that explains more if you want to dig into the details: https://akpainting.com/facility-maintenance-painting-annual-budget/

You never know who’ll become your next team member.

Fifteen years ago, Gray Riley wasn’t necessarily looking for his next opportunity. But he'd recently reconnected with Kevin Robbins, who had just made his own move back to A&K from the paint manufacturing industry. After months of conversations, Gray decided to make the transition and join the team.

He started as a Project Manager. From there, he moved into an Account Executive role and now leads as our VP of Sales and Marketing.

Gray has always believed that if you take care of the client, everything else follows. Fifteen years later, that approach still speaks for itself.

Happy anniversary, Gray! We're grateful for everything you've brought to this team.

We don’t get to do what we do every day by accident.

Someone chose a different life so we could have this one. They left families, jobs, and futures behind, not because they had to, but because they believed what we have here was worth protecting. And most of us get to live our whole lives never having to make that call.

So we don't treat this holiday as just another long weekend. We remember that those freedoms came at a cost, and that’s not something we overlook. Every person on our crew carries that with them, in how we work and how we treat the people around us.
