Your windows went down by themselves? 😳 Nobody broke in, Charlotte — your key fob did it.

On a lot of cars, press unlock once, then press it again and HOLD it, and every window rolls down. It's a real feature (meant to vent a hot car before you get in) — and a fob squeezed in a purse, pocket, or bag can hold that button all on its own overnight.

Your keychain is killing your ignition 🔑

Look at this bunch hanging off a Honda key in Charlotte — extra house keys, a bottle opener, tags, all swinging from the ignition every single drive.

That weight pulls down on the key and wears the ignition cylinder over time. The key starts to feel loose and wobbly, then you have to jiggle it just to turn it, and a worn cylinder can leave a key stuck or snapped.

The fix is simple: keep the ignition key light — car key plus one house key — and carry the rest separately. If yours already feels loose or hard to turn, we do ignition repair right here in the shop.

New battery. Dead in weeks? 🔑

This Nissan smart key came in dead again — just weeks after a new battery.

A healthy fob battery should last 1–3 years. Dying in weeks usually means a drain: the fob stored within range of the car keeps waking for the handshake, a button squeezed in a pocket or purse keeps it transmitting, or a worn/damaged board is pulling power. If a fresh quality battery dies fast again, test the fob itself instead of swapping again.

We checked this one on the counter, fitted a fresh correct cell, and it locked and started on the first press.

Cracked fob? Watch us save it. 🔑

This F-150 key came in with a cracked shell, worn-smooth buttons and a broken key-ring loop. The electronics inside were still good — so we transferred the original board, battery and chip into a fresh shell.

When the original chip survives, the key stays programmed to the car in many cases — no reprogramming needed. A crushed board or chip is a different story, and we'll tell you straight which one you have.

Key won't turn? Don't force it. 🔑

Charlotte Key Rescue — this Corolla's key wouldn't turn at all. Not a broken key. The steering lock was jammed because the car was parked with the wheels turned.

Do this instead: pull the wheel a little further the way the wheels are already pointing, keep light pressure on the key at the same time, and it releases. Forcing the key is how it snaps off in the ignition.

If every key fights the same way even after this, the ignition cylinder may be worn — AKM does ignition repair in the shop.

Charlotte drivers — a dead fob does not have to mean a tow. On most push-button Hondas, hold the fob flat against the start button and press the button WITH the fob itself. The car reads the chip at close range, even with a dead battery, and it starts.
