- Staying Cool When It’s Hot in the Garden

1. Work in the garden early in the morning when temperatures are cooler. Avoid working outside in the afternoon, the hottest time of day.
2. Dress appropriately in clothes that breath and pick up the sweat. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
3. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids regularly and stay hydrated.
4. Work in the shade when it gets hot.
5. Wait until dusk when temperatures go down to mow the lawn.
6. Install a misting system in outdoor entertainment areas to stay cool while it’s hot.

- Cutting Your Lawn
The secret to keeping your lawn green all summer is not cutting it lower than 2 inches. Lawns mowed tall are less stressed by heat and drought, build more extensive root systems, and need less water and fertilizer.

- Pruning
The best time to prune spring-flowering trees and shrubs is right after they bloom. If you wait until summer or fall, you’ll cut off a lot of the flowerbuds for next year. Examples: forsythia, azalea, quince, spiraea, lilac, and Japanese magnolias.

- Tilling soil amendments into some of the existing clay after the removal of the most compacted clay gives the soil the ability to drain and retain moisture in the clay that remains. Very helpful for new planting beds.

- Removing compacted clay to be able to augment the soil

Planting in compacted clay is analogous to planting In a pot. Water does not drain to allow the plant to uptake moisture and minerals efficiently. Plants can sit In water that stagnates and does not drain away, eventually drowning it.
