Today on Arbor Day, we volunteered our time to work with ReLeaf Cville in their mission to plant and preserve trees in neighborhoods that need them the most. In 2024, ReLeaf planted 90 free trees in the Woolen Mills. This morning, we broke into teams to compete for who could care for them best. Thank you to 29News WVIR for coming to Arbor Day at Arbor Circle!

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our former employee Ian Stasko. Although this news is quite heavy, we hope this story provides some light.

In 2021, Ian joined our company for only the summer months but in that time, he made a lasting impression, perhaps none more so than his first climb.

The entire crew was set to ascend one of the premier trees in Hollywood Cemetery for a picture. Ian insisted he had been climbing on the side and was confident he could ascend the tree to be in the picture. Perhaps a bit skeptical, we set him a rope that would be a very difficult climb. 10 minutes after trying this, most experienced climbers would have quit. But in half that time, Ian was 50 feet in the air, sitting on a limb right next to the top of his rope.

When we took the picture that day, all the climbers were assembled throughout the tree. Ian was at the top, a place he seemed always destined to be.

Yesterday we had the privilege of introducing teenagers to the world of tree climbing. We worked with ReLeaf Cville and their Green Team, a group of local teenagers they employ on a two week crash course into all things green in Charlottesville. We set up a fun competition with flags scattered around the tree they had to touch. Thank you very much to 29News WVIR for this wonderful story.

We recently pruned the prestigious Earlysville oak at the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport as well as fed it with our custom blended nutrients to keep it heathy for years to come. It is the 2nd largest white oak in Virginia and 400-500 years old. We are proud to have cared for it for nearly 30 years.

Last week, we had the privilege of giving our interactive spring tree tour of Hollywood Cemetery, taking visitors through the journey of a tree's life, from beginning to end. At each stop along the way, a crew member gave a hands-on lesson in tree health for that particular lifestage. Visitors pruned small branches, threw throwballs into trees and one even got in a saddle to ascend a rope. He did so well, he starts Monday!🤣

The next tree tour will be held in the fall.

Today for Arbor Day we volunteered our time to ReLeaf Cville who has planted over 300 trees in neighborhoods who need them most. This year, we helped maintain 45 trees in Rose Hill by pruning, edging and adding wood chips to keep them healthy for years to come. We split up into 3 teams and had a contest of the best before and after pictures with the winner pictures here. A little fun was had along the way judging by the last picture.

6 Common Winter Storm Questions:

1. Tree or branch on utility line? This is dangerous. Call your utility company to report the situation immediately and stay clear.

2. Tree damage to your property? Take photos and report the claim as soon as possible to your insurance company and if the situation is dangerous, contact us.

3. Neighbor's tree falls on your property? If a neighbor's tree falls on your property, you are typically responsible for whatever portion of the tree is on your property.

4. Tree falls on city or town property? Contact your municipality to remove it, even if the tree was on your property before it fell.

5. Removing your own trees or branches? Trees under heavy snow or ice are extremely dangerous and unpredictable. Chainsaws and ladder accidents are all too common with homeowners. If fallen trees or limbs are large, contact us.

6. Snow or ice on branches? Light snow insulates your trees and shrubs and does not need to be removed. Heavy snow can cause damage and if possible, should be removed by hand or with a light upwards sweeping movement using a broom. When it comes to ice, do not disturb any frozen limbs hanging over and touching the ground. Evergreens should straighten back up over time.

Stay safe out there.

Fun Photo Friday: When branches or roots of different trees are in prolonged contact they can eventually fuse together. This is called inosculation.

In this image captured by Rebecca Herbert, the thinner tree was cut years ago and the big one has been holding it since then. They "wake up" together in the spring and "go to sleep" together in the autumn.
