Train Architects

Train Architects Architecture firm based in Charlottesville, Virginia dedicated to quality design solutions for residential, commercial, and institutional projects.

Train Architects is an award-winning architectural design firm founded in 1990. All of our projects are site and client specific, and our work is characterized by dedicated, attentive, personal service. We view all projects as a collaboration between the owner, ourselves, and the builder. As experienced architects, we strive to make a project “feel” right for the site, complementary to the context

in which it sits, and if an addition—seamless. Our goal is to meet the client’s wishes and desires, in a way that results in a solution that supports lifestyle patterns, family interaction, and comfort in an elegant construct. It is our philosophy that providing clients with quality facilities in a timely manner at a fair cost is entirely reasonable, absolutely achievable, and results in the best projects. Our approach is to consider budget and schedule as normal components of the project parameters to be identified, agreed to, and worked within. The firm has received numerous design awards, including for excellence in residential design. The firm’s houses have been featured in Southern Living and c-ville Abode.

At VCU’s Rice Education Center, sustainable building practices are front and center. Over a decade ago, the building became the first in Virginia to achieve LEED Platinum, and ten years later, was awarded the Green Building Legacy Award for its continued contributions to the community.

Situated on the James River, the Rice Center was designed to have minimal impact on local ecosystems. The building maintains an array of eco-friendly features including a vegetative roof that supports sustainable stormwater management and landscaping with plants all native to Virginia. This living laboratory provides a place for research, teaching, and public outreach programs focused on environmental sciences.

A residential addition built to fit its setting, both physically and culturally. The style is based on a Southern vernacular that holds emotional connection for the owners and reflects the home's Virginia locale.

Interior renovations of the historic Willard Hall at University of Mary Washington brought a view of the previously hidden stair. The residence hall was originally built in 1910, designed by Virginia architect, Charles M. Robinson, and underwent several reconfigurations since. Our 2019 renovation brought renewed life to the building while highlighting its historic details and charm.

Students at University of Mary Washington moved back into this historic residence for Fall semester following the renovation last year. Originally designed by the architect Charles M. Robinson in 1914, the renovation of Virginia Hall brought important modern updates and energy efficiency to the building, while maintaining the warmth and charm of the original fabric. Historic projects offer their own challenges, but the results are so worth it! We are so pleased that students can continue to enjoy these spaces, over 100 years later!
