Oyster Castle living shoreline in Chincoteague Virginia 2016.

In April 2016 Conservancy staff and volunteers completed the first of two oyster reefs at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Here at Tom's Cove, over 5,200 castles were used for 1,400 linear feet of reef. Tom's Cove also includes 3 shell plants that cover 2.5 acres.

The reefs at Tom's Cove and Assateague Bay will bring our oyster castle totals to nearly 2/3 of a mile of coastline at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and 1¼ miles of coastline at all of the Virginia Coast Reserve. These reefs will be used to demonstrate and quantify how natural infrastructure can dampen wave energy and mitigate coastal erosion, as well as providing habitat, storm protection, and water quality benefits.

Numerous partners are working in this effort to secure the refuge for the future, including: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and Virginia Marine Resources Commission . The projects total $577,000 funded by the Hurricane Sandy disaster relief appropriation through the Department of the Interior (DOI). A portion of the funding comes from DOI's Hurricane Sandy Coastal Resiliency Competitive Grant Program administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF).
