It’s important to bear in mind that Trump got 49.8% of the popular vote— which means of the Americans who voted, 50.2% did not support him.

I'd like to see these at more beaches.

The local paper, The Daily Progress, published results from their Readers’ Choices—I was pleasantly surprised to find our firm listed in First Place.

Very humbled by whoever put our name forward— thank you so much!

Now we just need the paper to spell the first name correctly—but it’s all good.

My whole office volunteered for the United Way Day of Caring this year, as we have for the past several decades. This year we had the pleasure of helping an elementary school re-design the playground that was re-topped with asphalt leaving us a "blank slate". Working with the gym teacher at Broadus Wood Elementary we designed and laid out colorful 4-squares, a "mirror me" game, snakes & ladders, and re-painted their map of the U.S.--adding mountains and rivers. So fortunate to work with such talented, caring, dedicated people!

Here are some before, during and after photos--

Had so much fun with the office and several U.Va. students (thank you!) planning and painting (well, re-painting) some planters and picnic tables at Crozet Elementary School last September 2018 for the United Way Day of Caring. The planters are the four seasons, with radiating rainbow stripes in the pavement at the courtyard. The two picnic tables became lessons in the water cycle, and the circle of life for seeds to plants and back again. Architects are artists too!

Just completed an extraordinary trip to Haiti (near Cap Haitien) with Soaring Unlimited (out of Michigan/Michigan State) and Building Goodness Foundation (Charlottesville). Planning a women's health center/birthing center and had the official "ground breaking" ceremony.

The local Mayor also arrived and we had a chance to share the drawings with him and "walk" through the building which had been staked out with flags so the different areas and porches could be visualized on the site.

Still have significant fundraising to do, but getting closer to the construction start.

Am so impressed with Soaring's dedication (have been in Haiti for almost 20 years, and created a medical clinic that is fully staffed by Haitians), their director Laura Elliott, and the amazing knowledge and care that their board brings to the table.

Building Goodness Foundation has done just that--building goodness in communities--and I look forward to working with them on this and future projects.

A HOUSE DESIGNED FOR THE VIEWS

The character of this house reflects a traditional farmhouse, particularly from the front approach, which is fitting given the barn and farmland that defined this land prior to development. Siting the house was critical and much time was spent exploring different house forms and orientations. Before the house was built, the site provided mountain vistas in a 270-degree arc. The primary axis was established along a north-south line that anchors the house with the strongest views from the front door, through the great room, and on to the meadow and pond below, and ultimately to a full sweeping view of the mountains. This orientation allows the cross-axis to be anchored with the porches that view the more expansive mountain range to the west.

The owners first description of what they desired was a “porch with a house attached.” They now have a long front porch that provides shade from the southern light, a northern deck that captures the meadow, pond and mountains, and the two western facing screened porches that encompasses the 180 degree views from south to north. Both the upper porch at the master suite, and the first floor porch at the great room, gives them views of the sunset as it migrates throughout the season.

Nice article about the women's clinic in Haiti I designed with Building Goodness Foundation for/with Family Health Ministries (FHM)--well done Kathy & David Walmer--this made the front page of the Duke website!

Thank you to the whole team of Haitians, American volunteers, Building Goodness Foundation project manager Michael Annello and leader Michael Gallahue--you made it happen!

To call David Walmer modest would be an understatement. The Duke associate professor of global health who works as a reproductive endocrinologist is fond of saying, “I am completely unqualified to be doing anything that we’re doing here (in Haiti).” But what Walmer has built—together with his indefa…
