Your trees are thirsty. Like, really thirsty!

With the drought we’ve had, your trees may be showing stress like my Hydrangea tree, now as we are having some very dry days and heading into fall already, lots of trees, shrubs, and perennials are struggling. The good news? There are a few things you can do today that can make a real difference.

What you can do now:
• Water deeply and slowly, preferably in the morning.
• Add 2–4” of mulch to hold moisture and protect roots - just keep it away from the trunk.
• Watch for wilting, browning, scorched edges or early leaf drop.
• Give young and newly planted trees extra attention.
• Avoid unnecessary heavy pruning or added stress.

What you can do in the fall:

Keep watering during dry weather until the ground freezes, refresh mulch, clear grass and weeds from the root zone, and protect young trees going into winter.

A little attention now can make a huge difference next spring.

MINNESOTA GARDENS LIST FOR TREE TRIMMING AND REMOVAL

After getting many calls from SR's and other customers about tree trimming and tree removal, especially Ash Borer-related issues, we wanted to help seniors and others find reputable companies.
We asked for your recommendations and received 80+ texts, emails, and Facebook DMs with reviews and experiences.
We called, reviewed these companies, checked reviews, asked about working with seniors, and looked at pricing.
This is not a complete list, and there is no special order. These are simply the companies our community and customers recommended to us. There are many others, just review them.

If you want to save money, and get some of the best perennials and shrubs, we highly recommend going.

Since 1983, Wilson's Nursery has been a reliable source for quality plant material. As a wholesale grower, our customers are made up of landscape contractors, retail garden centers, municipalities, golf courses, and developers.

I love perennials because they come back year after year! But even perennials need a little attention. Dividing them keeps plants under control, encourages more blooms, and gives you extra plants for new beds. Most perennials should be divided every 3 to 5 years.

Peonies
Peonies don’t like to be disturbed and may not bloom the following year, but sometimes division is necessary. Make sure each division has 3 to 5 healthy eyes (buds) and replant them with the eyes no more than 1 inch below the soil surface.

Daylilies
Daylilies are best divided after they finish blooming. Dig up the clump, gently separate the fleshy roots, and replant divisions with three or more shoots for quicker blooms next summer.

Beebalm
Bee balm can spread like wildfire once established! Divide it at least every 3 years to keep it under control and help maintain healthier plants. Large clumps are also more prone to powdery mildew, so dividing can help improve air circulation.

Black-Eyed Susans
Every fall, I dig up clump after clump of Black-Eyed Susans to share with friends. But every gift comes with a warning: these beauties spread freely.

Coneflowers
Like Black-Eyed Susans, coneflowers spread easily and can eventually become woody in the center, leading to fewer blooms. Divide them after flowering, cutting the root ball in half and keeping at least 3 inches of healthy roots on each division.

Yarrow
Yarrow will let you know when it’s time to divide! When the center of the clump dies out and new growth starts sprawling across the ground, it’s time. Dig up the clump, divide the roots, discard the woody center, and replant the healthy sections.

Tree Removal Recommendations
We’ve been getting quite a few calls lately about tree removal, especially Dutch Elm, and while Minnesota Gardens does NOT do tree removal, we’ve decided to start putting together a list of tree removal companies that we can personally recommend.
In just the last week, we’ve had 17 calls asking if we know someone. We’ve also heard some pretty unbelievable stories from people who found someone on Craigslist or some flyer on their door? Please, please, please—be careful! With Craigslist or door knockers.
So, we’re going to do the homework for you.
Before we put a tree removal company on our recommended list, they will need to meet some pretty simple requirements:
• At least 3 years in business
• Located in the Metro area
• Proof of insurance
• Proof of licensing
• At least 7-10 verifiable references
• Willing to talk with us over the phone for an interview
We are NOT charging the consumer or the companies for this service. We’re simply trying to help our customers find honest, reputable, dependable tree removal companies that provide fair and reasonable pricing.
When we put our name behind someone, our name is on the line too. That means we’re not looking for just anyone with a chainsaw and a truck.
We want the BEST, fairest, and most reasonably priced companies we can find.

We are a huge fan of Sourdough Bread in our home and always looking for a strong scented and moist loaf. I wanted to give a shout out to Olive & Oven located in Chaska. I saw her post in Real Life in Chaska FB, I was not disappointed, it truly was moist, and the taste was a perfect Sourdough. We would recommend getting a loaf or one of her many other baked goods.
