My Tuesday harvest. A bucket of dried okra (seeds for next year) and 9 eggs (2 days worth). We are grateful! Save your seeds y’all. Then you won’t have to invest in more the next season. So far I’ve collected seeds for: marigolds, zinnias, okra, holy basil, Italian basil, lemons and lime basil, jimmy nardello peppers, golden Marconi peppers, jalapeños, cayenne peppers, cilantro, luffa and Georgia collards.

My Monday Harvest: All of my hens are laying now and I couldn’t be more excited! I harvested yarrow, jimmy nardello peppers, nadapeno peppers, Italian basil, tulsi basil, and sorrel calyces (not pictured). I spent some time observing the garden as it prepares for the changes in the seasons. The bees are buzzing around the marigolds and zinnias and my heart is full. This is what I lost in the hustle and bustle. But it’s back like it never left.

Choosing plants that are well suited to your climate takes a little bit of research. But don’t worry. Most seed shops have information about each seed and what their ideal growing conditions are. This allows you to take the stress out of worrying if a seed will survive in your area. The only information you need to know is average temperatures in your area, and the length of gross season that you have to ensure that you pick the best varieties suited for the number of days in your growing season.

Start now thinking about the space you have and what seeds you would like to grow. It’s easier to draw out the area you have and where the seeds will go to have a good idea of how many seeds to start when it’s time. I like to plant one to two more seedlings than I need to end up with just in case some of the seedlings don’t germinate or survive.

Well that’s the cue I needed to now only eat greens grown from my garden or small farmers I trust.

Food for thought: if it’s genetically modified to grow, what does it do to us when we consume and process it?
