Find yourself in the Vault, the 's speakeasy bar. Transforming the historic space into an intimate hospitality experience created unique design and construction challenges during the renovation of the Chattanooga Bank Building. The expansive room seen today was once divided by a three-foot-thick reinforced concrete wall, which was demolished early in the construction process to open the space while preserving the vault’s historic character.

The original vault doors in the basement of the Chattanooga Bank Building had been submerged in water for years, making their restoration particularly challenging. The design team also faced the task of making the space fully accessible while ensuring the massive vault door remained safely fixed in an open position. This approach preserved the integrity and drama of the historic element while prioritizing life safety, allowing guests to comfortably experience The Vault and its unique atmosphere.

Descending below, the stair leads to The Vault, once home to bank operations and rows and rows of safety deposit boxes, now a speakeasy bar defined by its original massive vault door, measuring over seven feet in diameter.

From original terra cotta and marble cladding to brass accents and intricate ceiling moldings, the reuse and restoration of historic materials were central to the rehabilitation of the Chattanooga Bank Building. Preserving elements such as the original marble and sourcing a match for the original granite throughout not only supported historic tax credit requirements but also maintained material continuity throughout the project while reducing replacement costs. Restoring these elements required extensive research, testing, and refinement to determine the most effective preservation methods. The process demanded patience, craftsmanship, and close collaboration among the design and construction teams. By prioritizing repair over replacement, the project conserved resources, honored the building’s original construction, and extended the life of its historic materials for future use.
