Plumb Architecture joined forces with other local lady architects for an installation at this year's park(ing) day in downtown Chattanooga. L.A.S.S. = Lady Architect Social Society. We used pallets and steel pipes to create a structure to suspend old rock climbing ropes and fabric panels - all meant to catch the wind, light, and shadows. Visotirs were encouraged to walk in the panels and remember summer visits to grandma's - and her linens going to dry outside on the line. Most of the materials will be upcycled at a local food forest and church garden projects. It was an absolute pleasure to work with these women and spend the day with many of them at our parklet.

AIA Tennessee showing up for the 2024 AIA Hill Day at the US Capitol today! We scored a tour with one of our state rep offices and got to ride in a little tram over to the Capitol, see areas of the building that are no longer in use, learn tales of various events that went down in the building over the years, and we even sat in on a portion of a session of the House of Representatives (mere moments after Mitch McConnell announced stepping down as GOP leader in November). This was my first national level advocacy event and it was a total blast. It was a busy busy day on the Hill today, for elected officials and for my architect colleagues - and yet, every meeting was honored and we were not rushed out of the office. Thank you to our Tennessee elected officials for truly listening to all of us today.

Oh my ... this is a photograph from my (Denise) high school architecture class, sometime in the Spring of 1994. I was that kid who just KNEW I wanted to design buildings at a young age (although, I first thought I would be doing interior design. It was my dad who told me to explore architecture). Architecture was my Plan A, and I haven't deviated from it one bit.

I am the Chair of our AIA Chattanooga Outreach Committee, which means I do my best to find different ways to engage our local K-12 students to learn more about the profession, to fundraise for different scholarship opportunities for local high schoolers and college students. I signed up just yesterday for another year of giving to our local AIA as a business supporter of all of these programs.

Lots of folks out there don't know what architects do ... and entire communities are lacking representation in the profession. Our committee has committed to a number of community events to teach about architecture in various capacities and programs this coming year. We can not wait to share the details on all of these fun events - some big, some small. All I can say right now is STAY TUNED!

Urban parks are my favorite places to visit in my travels. Urban parks that are also demonstrations for managing storm water? Even better! I love seeing how pockets can be carved away from the urban core to give recreation, gathering, fitness, AND a place for nature to do its magic.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Social media took a back burner in 2023. I started my architecture business over 10 years ago with the vision of establishing a better work/life balance in a profession where we are groomed to give our entire selves to our art. In the past 4+ years, my family has moved to a new state, my husband went to school for his nursing degree, we built a house (with quite a bit of our/my own physical labor to offset costs), we've homeschooled our younger daughter, and oh, there was this whole pandemic thing in the mix, too. To say it has been overwhelming would be an understatement.

This past weekend, I enjoyed a weekend in Birmingham, Alabama alone with my husband. Our first chance to reconnect in a very long time. I hope this will be the theme we live by in the year to come: (re)connections. Not only to ourselves but also to our friends, family, and the world that surrounds us.

Here's to a more manageable 2024 and to fostering relationships and the bonds that tie us all together!

Plumb Architecture representing AIA Chattanooga for the Hixson MS STEM night. Can we officially change these events to be called STEAM instead of STEM? Let's not forget how much of an impact art has on these professions! I brought some examples of drawings, shared a Revit model, brought some favorite architecture books, and then a number of hands-on activities. Heck, I even brought a kid to help demonstrate the building stations ... thanks to my favorite intern for the help!

I took my first ever trip to NYC this past weekend. We went to the Little Island, the High Line, Times Square, The MoMA, and lots of other spots in our short trip. I know I hardly scratched the surface of the things this city had to offer, so already trying to figure out when I can get back out there!
