People always have questions about my greenhouse, so let me answer the big three.
The first question is always about wind. How does it handle storms? This 6 x 10 Canopia Hybrid greenhouse has been through an 80 mph hurricane with no issues. I believe a big part of that is the foundation. I built a heavy 2 x 10 pressure treated frame that runs all the way around the base. That frame is secured to the earth with eight pressure treated 2 x 4s driven two feet into the ground at the corners and midpoints, all bolted to the base frame. The greenhouse itself is secured to that base with about 50 three inch deck screws. On top of that, I installed wind straps that run across the roof and tie back into the 2 x 10 frame. It is not just sitting on the ground. It is anchored like it plans to stay.
The second question is about snow. This photo was taken when we had 10 inches of wet snow. The greenhouse handled it like a champ. As soon as temperatures began to rise, the snow slid off the roof in sheets. The slant of the roof design really helps with snow load, and I did not have to shovel it off.
The final question is whether I wish it were bigger. The honest answer is sort of. As a focal point in the garden, I would not change a thing. I love it and use it as my homebase. It is perfect as a prep and staging area. However, it is not ideal for growing a large number of seedlings or producing vegetables all winter. I do wish I had a larger greenhouse in another area with heat and electricity so I could extend the growing season even more.
If you are thinking about getting one, anchoring it properly makes all the difference. Have you considered adding a greenhouse to your garden?
