It’s that magical time of year again. I hope you are all staying well, gathering with your Fam & making some beautiful handmade adornments for the place you call home.
As many of you know we had a medical crisis this summer and had to curtail our floral & wreath activities for the year. As many people focus on handmade things this year it’s a perfect time to make your own wreath.
Making wreaths can be as easy as buying a plain fresh evergreen wreath at your nearest store, and wiring or hot gluing dried flowers, berries, pinecones or your favorite momentos onto it. Thin ribbon, with natural/looking hand tied bows is super mod at the moment. Or you can forage from your garden and use a wire frame to secure your very own evergreens to make a uniquely you cottage style adornment for your front door. Either way, I hope you can find some creative hygge time& experience all the joy we do, creating wreaths in our workshop at Christmas time.
Happy Holidays everyone !

We fought hard & we won Dad. You woulda been so proud. I can still smell your corduroy jacket in the voting booth & helping you push each lever . I finally came around to everything you taught me. It’s so hard without you.

What if you could plant Mums in the fall that were Hardy* and came back year after year? I grew up in the New England area where truly Hardy Mums are prolific & varieties abound. I remember garden tours where the Mum display was pretty much a competition. So I thought all Mums were Hardy like ours. What a rude awakening. I soon realized as a young gardener after many dead mums that all those big box store Mums are fakes—deep fakes if there ever was one. 😂
But my dear flower friend Janet Foss] understood just how I felt & gave me some little cuttings from hers. I propagated them and finally have a little planting of Hardy Mums just inside our gate. I’m excited to propagate from this momma plant this coming Spring. I haven’t found a local Spokane nursery that carries truly Hardy Mums but there are online Nurseries you can order from. Kings Mums & Bluestone Perennials are two reputable sources. You should plant in Spring, not fall. It may take a year for them to get big and establish themselves. One little tip Janet gave me, don’t plant them near porch lights or street lights that stay on at night. They only start flowering when the long dark nights arrive. So If you have bright lights shining on them at night, you’ll never see any blooms.
Here’s to gorgeous fall displays that we only have to plant once! Aren’t you glad for Ninja level gardeners that can help us succeed? Thank you Janet Janet Foss] for my Mums and teaching me so much about growing. ✨💛

Dordogne by my garbage can walkway.. When I found an unnamed crate of tulips in the garage in late fall, I threw them in there, not even knowing. They look orange right? But there’s a rainbow in her petals, it’s pretty cool. And hard to describe unless you see it in person. I guess that’s why she’s so well known. A French variety whose height tops out at 30”, Dordogne is often Perennial when grown in the West where summers are dry, similar to the Mediterranean where it was bred.
Many people ask why their tulips don’t last and my two most important tIps are
#1 Buy a Perennial Tulip. Darwin, Emperor & Triumph are dependable perennial varieties.
#2 Keep your tulip bed dry & Not* irrigated during its summer dormancy. Summer irrigation & subsequent rot is one of the major things that shorten a tulip bulb’s longevity.
#3 If you have problems with squirrels, voles & pocket gophers line your holes with chicken wire. After planting & filling, put another layer of chicken wire on before you apply mulch.

The other kind of Tulips, Cut flower tulips, are gems in the garden, but will need replacing every 3-5 years. I plant both Perennial & Cut Flower varieties of Tulips but use perennials for larger plantings. I only want to dig those large trenches once. Happy garden planning & planting friends

If you are needing perennial tulips, there are still 2 varieties left on the Master Gardener Bulb Sale at the moment. Apeldoorn (Darwin) & Purple Flag (Triumph)
