A Zone 3 favorite for good reason — Black-Eyed Susans are tough, cheerful, and built for northern gardens.

Here’s how to help them thrive:

• Sun — Give them full sun (6+ hours a day) for the best blooms. They’ll tolerate partial shade but won’t be as bushy or full.

• Soil — Not picky. Well-drained soil is the main requirement; they handle poor or average soil just fine and don’t need heavy fertilizing.

• Watering — Water regularly while establishing, then let them be — established plants are quite drought-tolerant.

• Planting time — Get them in the ground in early fall so roots can establish before winter.

• Deadheading — Snip spent blooms to encourage more flowers through the season and to control self-seeding, if you don’t want them spreading.

• Winter care — Leave the seed heads standing through fall and winter — birds (especially goldfinches) love them, and the plant will self-seed for more blooms next year. Cut back in early spring.

• Dividing — Every 3-4 years, divide clumps in spring or fall to keep plants vigorous and control spread. Share with others! 🌻

It’s tempting to think the growing season winds down once the peak of summer color starts to fade — but for perennials, late summer and early fall might be the best time to plant all year.

Here’s why:
• Cooler air, warmer soil — Perennials can put energy into root growth instead of just surviving the heat, giving them a head start before winter.

• Less transplant stress — Milder days and cooler nights mean less watering stress and a smoother transition than a hot July planting.

• A jump on spring — Roots that establish now wake up ready to grow next spring, often outperforming perennials planted in spring the same year.

• Better selection, better deals — Many greenhouses (including us) mark down perennials this time of year, so you get more plant for your money.

Up here in Zone 3, timing matters — you’ll want those roots settled in well before the ground freezes.

A good rule of thumb: get perennials in the ground at least 4-6 weeks before your first hard frost.
