🌡️ Be honest, API family… Do you know how to work your thermostat, or do you just press buttons until something happens? 😂

All those settings can get confusing! Here are a few basics:

🔥 HEAT: Tells your system to heat your home when needed.
❄️ COOL: Tells your system to cool your home when needed.
🌀 Fan AUTO: On most systems, the fan runs during a heating or cooling cycle.
💨 Fan ON: Keeps the fan running, even when the system isn’t actively heating or cooling.

📅 Schedules and HOLD: A programmed schedule changes the temperature at set times. HOLD generally keeps your chosen temperature until you cancel it or the hold expires, depending on your thermostat.

A few small changes can help keep the warmth inside and make your home more comfortable:

☀️ Let the sunshine in! Open curtains on sunny windows during the day, then close them at night.

🚪 Check for drafts. Weatherstripping around doors and caulk around window gaps can help keep cold air out.

🛋️ Give your vents room. Move furniture, rugs, and curtains away from supply vents and return-air grilles so air can circulate.

🔎 Check your air filter. A dirty filter can restrict airflow. Make sure yours fits correctly and replace it when needed.

🧣 Add some cozy touches. Rugs on bare floors and a favorite throw blanket can make chilly mornings more comfortable.

🔥 GAS vs. ELECTRIC HEAT—Which costs more? ⚡

It’s a question we hear at API Service Pros, and the answer starts with: What kind of electric heat do you have? 🤔

🏠 Natural gas furnaces often cost less to operate than electric furnaces, baseboard heaters, and electric space heaters.

⚡ Electric heat pumps are a different story! They move heat rather than generate it, making them much more efficient than electric resistance heating—and potentially competitive with natural gas.

🥶 The catch? When a heat pump uses electric backup heat, operating costs can climb.

Your utility rates, equipment efficiency, thermostat setting, and home’s insulation all affect the bill. And propane? That’s a separate comparison from natural gas!

👀 Pop quiz, API family: Do you know where your air filter is—and what size you need? 🏡

It’s easy to forget about that filter until you’re standing in the store thinking… “Was it 16x20 or 20x25?” 😂

📍 Your filter may be at your furnace or air handler, or behind a return-air grille in the wall or ceiling. Some homes have more than one!

📏 Check the size printed on your current filter, and snap a picture before you shop so you’ll have it handy. If it fits poorly or has no label, let us help confirm the correct size.

📱 Bonus tip: Set a reminder to check it monthly! How often it needs replacing depends on the filter, your system, pets, and household conditions.

Okay, lets talk about it.

Yes, running your heat costs money—but switching your thermostat to HEAT doesn’t mean it runs nonstop. Your system responds when the temperature drops below your setting.

What affects the cost? 👇
🌡️ How warm you keep your home
❄️ How cold it is outside
🏡 Your home’s insulation and air leaks
⚙️ Your equipment’s efficiency and energy rates

Turning it on for a chilly morning doesn’t commit you to heating all day. And for most systems, cranking the thermostat way up won’t warm the house faster—it can just keep the heat running longer.

Have a heat pump? Large temperature increases can trigger electric backup heat on some systems, which can cost more to operate.

Another mini-split reinstallation in the books! 🔧❄️

This unit had not been installed correctly the first time, and the overall workmanship left a lot to be desired. We came in, corrected the issues, and got everything reinstalled the way it should have been.
