A WAY TO GROW ENOUGH TO HELP FEED YOUR FAMILY

It has become more important than ever for You to be able to grow at least part of what You and Your Family eat on a yearly basis. Big factors are the many chemicals and pesticides used on vegetables and fruits in the grocery stores, the rising food prices we are all seeing, and the instability we have seen throughout the world, and in our own Country. We are in a very uncertain time in our Countries history, and we need to be prepared.

Many Families, like yours, are now growing their own Home Gardens--much like our Grandparents and Great Grandparents did with their Victory Gardens years ago. They grew their own Food, Saved their Heirloom Seeds, and were very Self-Sufficient.

The chart below gives you a good idea of how much of each Seed variety or plant you will need to grow per person, based on picking and eating them fresh. If you plan on Canning or freezing your Veggies to get thru the year, you will need to plant more. I would suggest you multiply the amount listed by 3 - 4.

Seeds or plants per 100-ft. row is the recommended amount or number to use for proper spacing and growth. Estimated yield per 100-ft. row is based on optimum growth, so it could be different from Family to Family. If you don't plant in 100-ft rows, then you can divide the amounts down to the size you do plant. So if you have a 5' x 4' raised bed ( 20 sq ft ), you would just divide the 100' results by 5 .

FOR OPTIMUM YIELDS, YOU WILL WANT TO:
1) Start Off with fresh viable Heirloom Seeds
2) Use a good Compost/Soil mixture
3) Maintain Fertility
4) Provide enough water
4) Use Mulch
5) Control Pests ( insects, and the furry types) Companion Plants are a good way to control and deter pests, while staying Organic.

What is visiting your garden this season? What do you plant to invite pollinators and pest fighters?
I continue to learn so much this growing season. The lady bugs are now less in number as are the March Flies, but best of all, there are like zero aphids on my cherry trees. I still have lady bugs around the garden and yard and am seeing a number of their young. I have other visitors too - see below - along with butterflies and hummingbirds. I have an acquaintance who writes articles on insects that has been helpful in identifying the varied visitors to my yard. He said that I seem to have a nice bio-diversity going on - that pleased my heart.

While not examples of a full Potager Garden, they are my large potted examples. Variegated sage in one and strawberry mint in another. Here is an informative article of the history of the Potager Garden. I enjoy the beauty of mixing vegetables and herbs with flowering plants.

What a garden season this has been so far in 2022. Full of interesting learning curves. Isn't that some of the greatest pleasure of gardening - is the learning?!
Never, ever have I had so many aphids and those large, shiny black ones - I've been over run. Then Monday I came outside to a huge hatch of something - turns out they are March flies. Goodie, do they eat aphids - I pray - nope. Pooh! But neither do they eat my plants so I decide to wait and see how nature works out this imbalance. Lots of ladybugs this year and much pro-creating going on, thankfully, so I am in hopes their larvae are born with voracious appetites! I continued to hand remove, water remove and judicially spray a peppermint, soap and water solution, avoiding the 'girlie' bugs. Yesterday I checked on the tree leaves and believe there are less aphids as there also are less aphids visible crawling off the lawn, into the flowerbeds and up the pots. It remains to be seen but I am cautiously optimistic that the good guys are winning.

I use weekly applications of some form or another of Compost Tea in my garden. Here is an informative article on Compost Tea.

Gardeners know that compost works wonders by nourishing soil and plants. Compost improves soil structure, helping it drain well

DEFINITE YES ON THE GREENHOUSE...AND THE DIRTY HANDS.

Not everyone dreams of a big house with a white picket fence.

Some of us just want a peaceful place to call home, where we can get our hands dirty and create meaningful life.

and maybe a greenhouse. 😜

Have my first Nasturtium blossom of the season. I love them for their natural beauty but they also are a workhorse in the garden and kitchen. Here is an article that touches on some of their uses. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds company has a great variety. Have you grown them in your garden? What is your favorite variety? Do you use them in the kitchen?

Edible, beautiful and oh-so-easy, nasturtium is the flower that can do it all. Our guide will get you started with growing nasturtiums.
