At Hilltown Tree & Garden, we were proud to join Tawny Simisky, Massachusetts Certified Arborist and Entomologist at UMass Amherst extension for an Arbor Day celebration at New Hingham Regional Elementary School in Chesterfield. 🌳

Jim and Priya McSweeney (both MCAs) helped remove hazardous trees affected by emerald ash borer and storm damage earlier this spring.

This week, we worked with Tawny and the community to replant four memorial trees honoring a former teacher and student.

Current Students also received Fraser fir seedlings to take home, helping inspire the next generation of tree stewards!

Tree care is more than maintenance—it’s community, education, and Preservation!

Native plant of the week, RAMPS!

A true sign of Spring, Allium tricoccum (ramps) are a local delicacy. They are often used in cooking as an onion/garlic replacement or enhancement and they are delicious.

However, they are delicate and can easily be over harvested. Many who find a wild patch keep the location secret to prevent this- it’s kind of funny!

If you are lucky enough to come across a patch you would like to forage: an ethical way to harvest is to just cut a leaf or two and leave the bulbs in the ground to regenerate.

Brad Leone has some great videos and recipes where he utilizes Ramps he harvests in Connecticut!

The evil monster is here.

(Disclaimer graphic 2nd photo)

My first sighting of a Spotted Lantern Fly (SLF) in the field here in western Massachusetts. Truly an unfortunate sight.

I first saw one in person in the Pennsylvania/Delaware area a few years ago and dreaded this day. The host species was a Red Maple (Acer rubrum) and I squashed several. It does cause negative health effects to red maples and is devastating to grapes. It secretes honeydew which will drop down upon you, causing your favorite shade tree to no longer be your favorite shade tree.

If you see one, you will likely see many. Squish them all! ☠️

We are very grateful for the opportunity we had to work alongside our friends and neighbors Roberts Construction at the Daughters of the American Revolution State Forest in Goshen, MA.

We reconstructed a large island bed with several trees and shrubs, new stone walls, dozens of perennials, a large patio with memorial bricks and flagpole, and replanted the grass area with fescue from Savage Farms Sod.

It has been a really fun project to be a part of, and it is nice to know that all of the contractors who completed this Revolutionary war veteran memorial are small local businesses 10 minutes away from the site. Whenever we need supplies to get a job done, whether it is tools, materials, or plants we get it as local as we can. Supporting your friends and neighbors only grows your community stronger! If you visit the D.A.R. Look out for the memorial by the pond!
