A few weeks ago I brought a few small snap dragon bundles to my local farmers market and a friend who had a stall there was kind enough to sell them for me! It was so fun to get the opportunity to have my flowers available for sale and to have others enjoy them as much as I do!!
ps- we sold ALL eleven bouquets!! 😊

Officially time to start getting plants in the ground!! Started this evening with the snapdragons! My goal for this year was to grow a lot more of these as they are among my favorites! As such, I also started several new colors this year too and I’m excited to see all the variations when they start blooming! It feels so good to play in the dirt again!

So… I just realized that I got so busy working with the flowers last summer that I didn’t really post pictures of them… I’m so sorry!! Let me correct that now… here are some photos from last year's (year one) growing season: Enjoy!!

Whew! I can now officially say that all 475 strawberries are planted!! Hooray!! Last fall I purchased this handy dandy implement to go behind the tractor; it shapes the bed and lays the plastic “mulch” all in one go!! Next I used a small blow torch to burn holes in the plastic and then it was time to plant!! There are 5 different varieties because I want to figure out which ones taste the best, have the longest shelf life, and which do best in our growing climate. We have also been busy practicing making chocolate covered strawberries because I’d like to bring that to market as well!! It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!

Getting the willows planted!! Check out this great tool my husband made for me!! The pointy end goes into the ground up to the depth of the foot peg (which is how you drive it into the ground). This creates a perfect little hole for plunking the willow sticks into the ground. Then simply pull up with the handle. Viola! Willows planted! Still have another 120 to go in the ground but the wind was so strong it kept blowing the torch out that we use for burning holes in the plastic. Burning is the preferred method as it prevents the plastic from unraveling and thus enlarging.

Pretty exciting stuff going on at the farm: the flower field got it’s first tilling of the season! Super excited to be able to start planting soon! Our last frost date is still several weeks away. Still need to finish the fencing (don’t want the deer and bunnies to eat everything that gets planted). The rows of landscaping fabric are for the willows!!

Actual squeals of delight!! Guys, and gals, what you are looking at is 230 willow cuttings that arrived today!! Most are basketry willows, and a few are for bouquet work! Willows have been my favorite trees since I was a child and I’m so excited to get these!!
Once our snow melts (we just got a foot of fresh snow 2 days ago) these will be getting planted out in the field!
How this works: willow cuttings are taken while dormant (winter) and then planted in the spring. For the first year or 2 I will let them establish a good root system and grow as much as they like. After that, they will be harvested every, or every other year as “whips” for weaving baskets!!
