About 10 inches of soil, that's it, that's all (well I did fertlize, mulch and thin earlier in the season :-). Hey good people, Batavia here! Mustards were directly sown in an X-shape, and insect netting is being used to protect the plants from cabbage worms. Even with limited time, the transplanted kale plants are expected to produce small leaves And I have some plants in other parts of the garden that have put on some nice size. Tag a friend who loves gardening!

Hey good people, Batavia here. The first group of lettuce transplants were moved outside too early and some bolted due to warm weather we had in August/September. Once a plant bolts, there's not much that can be done. In some varieties, the leaves will become bitter, so it's best to harvest them first and check to see if it's still edible (so far, so good)

Hey good people, Batavia here! I'm all planted here in my Chicago garden for Fall (except garlic) and looking ahead to my avg first frost which is around November 1st. But really, daylight matters more than the actual frost date. The cool-weather plants I'm growing can survive a frost, but extended freezing temps can be trouble for some.
