Story 2 of the Haircut Chronicles:

I recently spoke with a 70-year-old couple who owns a home worth around 900K and owe around 200K on it. They are looking to downsize, so they found an 800K home they want to purchase and fix up.

The issue is: they don’t have the money for a down payment or the 300K needed for the renovations.

So, what did I do? I helped them solve their problem but connecting them with Consumers Credit Union to take out a HELOC that they can use towards their down payment and renovations.

15 years ago, I helped a woman secure a reverse mortgage so she could stay in her home and care for her disabled sister. Sadly, 2 months ago, the sister passed and last week, the woman passed.

The woman’s son reached out to me to help him sell the home and purchase a new home.

Loss is always sad but it’s amazing that the woman and her sister were able to live in the home for 15 more years due to the help of a reverse mortgage.

I usually share stories where I’m able to help someone. Unfortunately, I couldn’t help this caller, but maybe her story can help you or someone you know.

I recently spoke with an 80-year-old widow whose home is worth about $400,000. She still has a $150,000 mortgage, carries approximately $25,000 in credit card debt, and has outlived her retirement assets. She hasn’t been able to make her mortgage payment since January and is currently in forbearance with her loan servicer. She has also fallen behind on her credit card payments.

Had she reached out to me last fall, I may have been able to help her secure a reverse mortgage. That could have paid off her credit card debt, eliminated her existing mortgage payment, and allowed her to remain in her home with greater financial stability.

Unfortunately, by the time she contacted me, her financial situation had deteriorated to the point where a reverse mortgage was no longer a viable option.
