M2 Design Lab REDEFINING THE IDEA OF HOME
DISTINCT BY DESIGN

08/21/2026

Inside M2 Design Lab.

Why every project starts with a consultation, not a mood board. Before we talk finishes or furniture, we ask about how you actually live — how you move through your space, what's not working, what you don't even know to ask for yet.

Design isn't guessing what looks good. It's understanding the problem well enough that the solution feels obvious.

Today's lesson: layered lighting. A grid of recessed can lights isn't a lighting plan. Real lighting design works in layers: ambient for the overall room, task for where you actually need to see, and accent for depth and mood.

Even rows of cans flatten a room no matter how nice the furniture is. Lighting should have rhythm, not just coverage.

The rooms everyone skips and why they're actually the most important ones.

No one designs the entryway first. The hallway gets an afterthought. The staircase is just something you cross a hundred times a day without thinking about it. The basement gets ignored entirely — until it's the only space left for everyone to actually use.

But these are the spaces everyone experiences, every single day. The first five seconds of every home, the first impression that sets the tone for everything after it.

The showcase rooms get the photos. The in-between spaces are what people actually live in.

What most clients get wrong when they hire a designer...

They think hiring a designer means handing over a Pinterest board and waiting for magic. The real value isn't picking pretty things — it's the decisions nobody sees. The floor plan. The lighting plan. The materials that hold up in real life.

Great design starts long before the styling does.

This nursery proves it — soft, layered tones with tailored drapery, custom wallpaper, and lighting that feels intentional instead of an afterthought. Quiet doesn't mean unfinished.

Even the smallest room gets the full treatment.

Everyone wants one because it photographs well and sounds modern. But not every home needs it — sometimes walls exist for a reason.

Sound control, defined function, actual privacy. Knocking one down doesn't automatically make a home better.

Open concept isn't a rule. It's a choice and not always the right one.

Unfiltered with Markus.

Let's talk about influencers claiming to be designers. Everyone loves a good Pinterest board — but curating a pretty picture isn't design. Design is knowing why a wall can't move, how light behaves in a room at 4pm, what material will actually hold up to real life.

A mood board doesn't make you a designer. Solving problems no one else can see does.

Your dream kitchen is waiting...

Torn-up granite and exposed studs on one end. Green cabinetry, marble, and a black island that ties it all together on the other.

This is what's actually behind every kitchen you save for inspiration.

One decision. Every room.

It's not one material repeated the same way twice. It's a formula — a deep, saturated color, paired with black and brass, used differently in every space but always unmistakably ours.

The teal bedroom. The navy kitchen. The moody dining room. Different rooms, different functions, same throughline.
That's what makes a house feel designed, not decorated.

Design school with Markus: episode 1

We're kicking off a new series where Markus breaks down the design concepts that actually matter — the stuff that separates a good room from a great one.

No fluff, no jargon. Just real design education from someone who does this for a living.

New episodes dropping soon. What do you want Markus to cover next?
