Why We Don’t Offer Virtual Interior Design Services:

Great interior design is about so much more than how a space looks on a screen. It’s about how a space feels when you’re actually in it.

At Stephanie Nickolson Design, Inc., we believe in experiencing a space firsthand~ understanding the natural and artificial lighting, acoustics, scale and proportion, traffic flow, textures, comfort, and even the sensory elements that simply can’t be fully understood through photographs or a video call.

Our approach is personal, hands-on, and sensory-focused. We want to walk through your space, see how you live or work in it, understand what feels right—and what doesn’t—and create an environment that supports you while reflecting your individual style.

After 40 years in interior design, we’ve learned that some things simply can’t be designed from a distance.

A powder room is the perfect opportunity to express your personality and make a lasting impression. Often one of the first spaces guests experience, it should reflect your lifestyle while telling a story about your home.

Sometimes, a bold and whimsical wallcovering becomes the exclamation point, while the remaining materials quietly support the design with texture, warmth, and balance.

We had the privilege of spending the day at Pathways by PADS Lake County, a new fixed-site family shelter in Waukegan, Illinois, helping create spaces that offer comfort, dignity, and hope for families rebuilding their lives.

This remarkable $6.5 million transformation of a former motel now provides private, furnished rooms with individual bathrooms for up to 64 families (approximately 240 people), along with centralized support services and case management to help families move toward long-term stability.

It was an honor to contribute, even in a small way, to such an inspiring mission. Thank you to Designs 4 Dignity and PADS Lake County for the incredible work you do every day.

GOLD COAST CONDO DESIGN~

Talk about great bones! This Gold Coast condo was already gorgeously renovated when my team and I were hired. We stepped in to furnish and decorate it.

From floor plans and layouts to material and finish selections, we taped off the floor to indicate where furniture and area rugs will be situated.

From colored renderings to mood boards and flat lays, we provided it all to give my clients the visual of what their space would look like.

We not only wanted it to be aesthetically beautiful but functional for the family with a comfortable and most importantly, feel good vibe.

Color Consultation: It’s More Than Choosing a Paint Color. 🌈 🎨

Every successful color consultation begins with a thoughtful process.

For this commercial lobby, we narrowed dozens of possibilities down to two finalists, then placed large paint samples throughout the space to evaluate how each color responded to the existing flooring, woodwork, architecture, and changing natural and artificial light.

We then used a visualization tool to compare both options before making our final recommendation.

Lighting can completely change how a paint color looks—that’s why we never rely on a tiny paint chip alone.

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER~

When meeting with our homeowners, we are also meeting with their families, including their pets. We watch how they move through their environment, where they like to sit, eat, play and cohabitate.

Pets lives matter.

The materials and finishes we use are specified for how they look, perform and feel. We are listening to everyone in the family’s needs.

When a space makes you feel good, not only look good~ our design philosophy incorporates using natural, warm and welcoming products that entice you into a room and make you want to stay. After a full day at NeoCon, one thing became abundantly clear: design is moving beyond how a space looks and focusing more on how a space makes us feel.

From acoustic products that reduce noise and overstimulation to lighting, textures, and materials that engage the senses, the emphasis was on creating environments that support comfort, well-being, and human connection.

I was especially excited to see the continued merging of residential and commercial design—bringing warmth, comfort, and hospitality-inspired experiences into workplaces and public spaces, while maintaining the durability and performance these environments require.

As designers, we have the opportunity to shape experiences, not just spaces. That’s what makes events like NeoCon so inspiring.

Soft blues, creams, and warm neutrals flow throughout this home, creating a sense of calm, balance, and serenity.

Designed for a family with two young boys, this space was thoughtfully created to be both beautiful and livable—allowing the children to play freely without worrying about damaging delicate furnishings. We believe great design should support real life, blending practicality with style in a way that feels effortless.

Our goal is to create spaces that not only look beautiful but feel good to live in—homes that reflect our clients’ lifestyles and become cherished for years to come.
