Sam Marts of Marts & Valentin Architects joined the board of the Wicker Park Lutheran Church Building Friends which is helping make the church more accessible in every way possible. I produced this model to help facilitate multiple fundraising activities. The Romanesque Revival Church dates from 1907.

Marts & Valentin Architects renovated this handsome, circa 1890 landmarked building on Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, nearly 30 years ago. Originally, the building was a furniture store with three floors of display, plus a top floor workshop and offices. Today, the ground floor is a discount shoe store and Marts & Valentin re-imagined the top three floors as rental units, dividing the floors in half along the diagonal, from exit stair to exit stair, creating six triangular apartments. Insulated glass windows were installed on the street front and new window openings were created on the rear side. The Milwaukee facade was cleaned and ultimately the metal cornice restored.

This lovely atmospheric Japanese print is currently on display at the Art Institute of Chicago as part of the Bruce Goff exhibition. Bruce Goff owned this print along with some 400 others. This collection of Japanese prints was given to the AIC as part of Goff's archives.

This drawing illustrates a design idea for how to light a challenging space. I imagine using new off-shelf, LED lights that are flat discs, that attach directly to the electric box, either on the wall or the ceiling. This provides a clean modern light. As a bonus, with the flick of a switch, you can choose the light "temperature"; "cool", "warm", "daylight", or "cool daylight".

Today, Sunday, Sam Marts, with Marts & Valentin Architects, participated in MEET ME ON MILWAUKEE. The Alderman and the Chamber of Commerce opened the street so businesses and the public could mix, mingle and trick or treat. I displayed three house models to the wonderment of all while sporting my buccaneer ensemble.

Here we are looking at the finer points of laying out a new kitchen in an existing building. The question is, how "open" the kitchen should be to the rest of the house? This point of view is from the front door. Should the right corner enclose the upper cabinets (bottom image)? Or should the kitchen be completely exposed (top image)? These drawings are to assist the owner in making this decision.
