Save energy (and money! ) this summer by following a few easy steps.
1) Change your furnace filter. If using standard filters, you should be doing this once a month. If using heavier duty pleated filters, you can stretch it to three months. The harder your furnace has to work to breathe, the more energy it uses.
2) Install a programmable or smart thermostat, and USE IT! Turn up your AC to 76 while you are away at work.
3) Use your ceiling fan. Your ceiling fan has settings for both summer and winter. The blades should spin counter-clockwise during the summer, pulling the cool air that sinks back up to keep you cool. If your fan spins clockwise, there is a small switch typically by the lights on the fan.
4) Install window treatments. Besides sprucing up the looks of your living space, window treatments can help keep the hot air out. During the day, keep blinds and curtains closed for windows facing the sun (typically south and west sides). Once the sun sets, open your blinds and drapes.
5) Keep the area around your AC compressor outside clear. There should be at least 2 feet open on all sides to ensure the air can circulate around it.
6) Have your AC tuned up yearly. They will check refrigerant levels, efficiency, and overall health of the unit.
