Our client's goal was to create a timeless house that fit the Traditional character of the neighborhood. They were also keenly interested in a sustainable residence with a focus on air quality and convenient living without sacrificing comfort or elegance. Natural light was also very important to our clients, so the home is centered around a naturally-lit stairwell and second floor sky-lit gallery. Both living floors are arranged to focus on these light-filled spaces. The large city parcel also assured that all rooms are amply illuminated. The buildings style and orientation was created to be a good neighbor. Many adjacent homes have front porches with Traditional details, while others are more Contemporary. This home sought to be compatible with both.

To preserve the architectural integrity of this historic Chicago greystone, the existing facade and significant original interior features have been restored. Blending the home’s rich history with modern functionality, the grand front rooms are returned to former glory, with modern systems for enhanced comfort, while previous inharmonious additions have been replaced to create seamless floor plans for contemporary living.

Set within a sweeping mountain meadow and framed by a spruce windbreak, Alpine Getaway is composed as a series of gabled pavilions connected by glass-walled links that guide movement and frame the surrounding landscape. As the driveway winds toward the home, the terrain, architecture, and landscape work together to offer controlled glimpses of the distant mountain range, building anticipation before arrival across an entry bridge.

Nick Moorhouse joined bba Architects in the winter of 2022 as an Associate leading projects through all stages of development and construction. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2012 and his Masters of Architecture from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2014. While in school, Nick studied Danish design in Copenhagen and has a deep appreciation of the Scandinavian approach to creating clean and inviting spaces.

Situated along the perimeter of the property, this unique home creates a continuous street wall, both preserving plenty of open yard space and maintaining privacy from the prominent street corner. A one-story mudroom connects the garage to the house at the rear of the lot which required a local zoning variance. The resulting L-shaped plan and the central location of a glass-enclosed stair allow natural light to enter the home from multiple sides of nearly every room. The Arts & Crafts inspired detailing creates a familiar yet unique facade that is sympathetic to the character and scale of the neighborhood. A chevron pattern is a key design element on the window bays and doors and continues inside throughout the interior of the home.

Perched atop a renovated Gold Coast hotel, this 6,000 sf 2-story penthouse apartment is home to a young family of five. A new wood and glass stair in the center of the plan is the highlight of the modern and clean aesthetic that is present throughout the unit. Plan updates include opening the dining room onto the entry, taking advantage of the natural light and sweeping views of downtown. A full renovation of the kitchen, master suite and children’s wing adds functionality for our clients.

Although built on four lots in the heart of the city, the scale and character of this new, 12,000 single family residence is well integrated with it's historic neighbors, maintaining a park-like setting for the street. The traditional Federal Style detailing of the exterior is well-suited for the character of the neighborhood, providing a formal public front. Once inside, however, the character transforms into a vibrant and light-filled modern Art Deco interior for a young family. The home will also feature a focus on sustainable green design.
