Continuing a look back at one of our earliest residential projects, completed over 13 years ago.

Designed as a continuation of the interior, the experience unfolds gradually as one moves outside and becomes enveloped by a lightweight aluminum trellis structure. The geometry of the trellis reinforces a sense of enclosure while complementing the fanning arrangement of the decks below. Over time, climbing vines were intended to soften the structure, providing shade, privacy, seasonal color, and fragrance.

Looking back, this project reminds us that meaningful architecture is not dependent on scale. Even the smallest spaces can enrich daily life when approached with intention, and imagination.

One of our first residential renovation projects, completed over 13 years ago.

Looking back, this project still captures many of the ideas that continue to shape our work today: bringing light into challenging conditions, creating clarity through simplicity, and transforming existing constraints into opportunities.

Thirteen years later, it is rewarding to revisit projects like this and recognize how many of the values that define our practice today were already beginning to take shape.

White oak cabinetry meanders throughout the apartment, gracefully interacting with the columns, ceilings and floors.

By sensibly stitching the past with a “lighter” design logic, we crafted a comfortable home, adding a new chapter to an ongoing story…

The geometry and scale of the apartment presented opportunities to articulate walls, ceilings and material transitions in unexpected ways. Thin steel door frames with obscured glass transmit light from the east and west into a central circulation gallery that connects sleeping and living. The kitchen was relocated at an intersection of primary living-zones. From this area one can perceive the juxtaposition of key design elements choreographing open spaces and views

This project represents our ongoing inquiry into visual lightness and continuity. In this renovation we explored juxtaposition, introducing a new spatial dialogue within the perceptive weight of a historic building.

Erected in 1912, this 10-story landmark structure is one of the oldest multi-family buildings in Chicago. Originally built with 3 distinct units per floor, each uniquely shaped due to its location along the bend of Lake-Shore-Drive. In contrast to today’s lifestyle, these apartments were designed in a time of compartmentalized living, with servants and social formalities in place, resulting in a divided interior with little connection to the outside.

Seeking to live in a brighter and much more open space, our clients tasked us to combine two large apartments as their new home. We responded by stripping the spaces down to core building elements, revealing the perimeter and structure. Newly liberated columns became the catalyst for organizing the entire dwelling, marching through the interior and bringing two distinct apartments together as one cohesive whole.
