COBU recently attended the PowerHouse SMART Networking & Education Chicago Luxury Summit at THE MART. Justin and Julie heard from leaders in the construction, architecture, landscape architecture, and real estate industries on meaningful methods of collaboration across design disciplines. How does lighting design shape the way we experience a space?

COBU was recently joined by Jordy Bradley from PureEdge Lighting for an insightful discussion on the impact of lighting design. Every space has different lighting needs, whether it is an office, a bedroom, or a dental office. Changing the hue, saturation, and brightness not only greatly affect functionality of a space, but how people feel within it. Thoughtful lighting design can enhance comfort, productivity, and overall well-being.

Work in progress!

Construction is well underway on these four apartment buildings in North Aurora, IL. We are onsite watching our design come to completion. Lots of work is being done both interior and exterior. Stay tuned for future updates!

COBU College is in session!

All about amenities! Thank you, JT, for teaching us the ins and outs of amenity building and clubhouse design. Many residential communities we work on include a clubhouse on site, often housing restrooms, a fitness center, community spaces, and the pool. Special consideration is necessary with pools to ensure that our design meets the needs of the community while being safe.

Designed for connection and relaxation, this amenity building and pool are located in Savannah, Georgia. A covered gathering area leads out to the pool beyond. The organic shape creates several pockets of space for people to enjoy the pool. The building itself tactfully houses the restrooms and pool equipment. Centrally located within a residential community, the pool is easily accessible to all residents, offering the perfect retreat for lounging by the pool or enjoying a refreshing swim!

COBU is finding inspiration among the designs of Eero Saarinen, David Kahler, and Santiago Calatrava! The team traveled to Wisconsin for the Milwaukee Art Museum Architectural Tour. The COBU team is out in the field!

We visited this townhome project currently under construction in Cary, Illinois! Visiting a townhome development allowed the team to see the buildings in different phases of construction. As the buildings progress one by one, the team saw buildings from initial foundation stage, to framing, to finishes all on one site. So cool to see this project progress into reality!

COBU strives to provide many opportunities for site visits to increase our collective understanding of the construction process.

This Earth Week, we reflect on architecture with meaning. At COBU, we value designing buildings that benefit both people and the environment.

A few ways that we design with sustainability in mind are:

Material Samples - Sustainable design starts from the beginning with how we source material samples. We only order samples when necessary and return them to be reused or recycled when we no longer need them. This reduces excess production and waste.

Design - Buildings that people enjoy are the ones that last. For us that means designing buildings that can be enjoyed not only for their immediate use, but with the future in mind.

Adaptive Reuse - The greenest buildings are the ones that already exist. We love projects where we can bring new life into an existing structure.

Repair - The most sustainable action you can take is reusing and maintaining what is already built. When a building is damaged, we can rebuild and repair instead of starting from scratch.
